    Re: install pidgin ?

Best solution: Wait until it gets into the repos and apt-get it.

Second-best solution: Find a .deb for it and dpkg -i it.

"I-Really-Want-This-Now-And-I-Am-A-L33t-H4x0r" solution: learn how to compile software, download the source, install the dependencies, ./configure, make && make install.

Is pidgin going to show up in updater as a gaim upgrade or are we gong to need to uninstall gaim? Don't speculate, only post if you know.

Thanks. Doesn't really answer my question. I am waiting for pidgin to be available in the repositories.

            Re: install pidgin ?

I'm guessing they will make a new package called pidgin and the new version of gaim will be an empty package with a pidgin dependency.

I am not sure it will work with kde. Seems to be very gnome orientated:
              http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=817

So I would suppose waiting would be the best option

Hmm well I have used Gaim for 5 years or more now, and I downloaded Pidgin from http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=817

Installed the package quit Gaim and started Pidgin. All my old Gaim options were present in Pidgin.

One of my buddies have experienced that his .gaim folder got jacked up after second install of Pidgin, so take a backup before you install it.

Pidgin is great, Yeeehaaa it fixed my "couldn't add buddy 1 to the buddy list" problem.
