Is Feisty Ready for Prime Time?

Hadn't fiddled much with my sandbox machine in which I'd been running Edgy for the last six months...early this week I got an upgrade notice in the toolbar indicating that Feisty was ready for upgrade. I followed the instructions in Adept and, of course, the whole thing choked after a few hours of downloading.

So I was left with a kinda-installed Feisty version of Kubuntu. This prompted me to go to these venerable forums and follow the sage advice of the initiates into the mysteries of Ubuntu/Kubuntu. After hours of fixing and refixing and downloading and restarts, I was left with a command prompt-only version of Feisty, which didn't have much value to me. All future attempts to improve the situation resulted in no improvement.

Sooo, I did a clean re-install, and now I'm in the process of rebuilding my networking, printing, graphics drivers, etc from scratch. What fun ...

That being said, the system now crashes at least once per session, with Adept leading the way. It seems virtually impossible to install an app using the package manager without it telling me that it stopped because it was likely to break something. Yah, yah, I can use the command line, but I kinda got away from that in the '80s and was looking for something that actually had a workable user interface for common tasks.

Enough kvetching...I really like the work that's been done on the OS and suites of apps and am a big proselytizer, but wholly cow, Batman, ya can't be tempting the unwashed masses into upgrading an OS when it's in this condition.

Hoping for lotsa fixes in the near future....

Hate to hear the bad experience. I've been there once or twice . As far as ADEPT, I haven't personally run across any problems. Feisty as a whole has been a blessing. All machines that I've dealt with in upgrading to Feisty all performed rather well. I'm not saying perfectly, I did have to rebuild xorg.conf on a few and had to add a few commands in menu.lst on a few. With that said, I believe Feisty was/is a bridge to newer processes that will help function and growth in the future along with what KDE is doing in 4.0. Hope your system stabilizes .

Yep, been there Zimm, got the tee-shirt. I have a suggestion, based on my own experience learning Linux, but I may be too late with it. And you probably won't like it -- but you did ask, right?

I would suggest what you need is a few practice runs with the basic installation (not configuring printers and USB devices). I remember Adept crashing too -- I think it was my "early" Edgy system. Probably it was during my "I really want Grub on SATA #2, Partition 2" phase, which I subsequently outgrew. With a GParted live CD, a half-hour studying this excellent site:

      http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/partitioning

and an alternate install CD, I would think you could get really good at setting up your basic system and learning what the heck is interfering with Adept -- it is pretty fundamental to a sound Kubuntu system, and you can't really go forward without it (pay no attention to the Synaptic crowd -- they're just prejudiced ....).

Sorry, mate -- I doubt that's what you were hoping to hear, but that is my experience, and I haven't seen a crash message in weeks.

        Prejudice = $ (( Experience - Knowledge )) ... or what?

Prejudice = $ ((I just hate the way it looks) + (I just hate who it came from)) - (I'm too stinkin' lazy to do otherwise)

Thanks for the kind words, suggestions, and the Ohio Math (I think)

I've found that if I gripe in public my machine stabilizes almost imediately, which was the case yesterday. There were a couple of repository glitches that took some tinkering with that helped considerably. Still getting two or three app crashes per day, which wasn't the case with Edgy, but overall rebuilding the system went much faster than earlier models...I couldn't be getting smarter...nah!

So, onward with playing in the sandbox...now if I can just keep the cats out of it...

I writing that down -- that could come in very handy!

Good to hear things are working Zimm -- hang in there -- the more you work with it the better it behaves (like a bad pet, I guess).

By the way, and for the record, I use Synaptic on my Ubuntu 64-bit system, and it works just fine.

I have "rituals" like that as well and I'm sure everyone else does as well.
