ok, I booted up, clicked the update icon and apt-get update worked, and it's blazingly fast!
tried out add-remove programs, also worked. installed firefox, and here I am. did a terminal apt-get update upgrade just to see and it found nothing to upgrade, no errors...so...something about the initial install? don't know, but it appears to be working now.
Thanks for your help. think I'll go play and see what I can do!
