Help with MJPG encoded AVI video

    Hello,

My digital camera records AVI movies, but according to Konqueror they are actually encoded with MJPG. Kaffeine crashes every time I try to view them, but strangely if I open with the embeddable Kaffeine preview in konqueror they are viewable. However, the picture is extremely distorted with green horizontal lines across the screen. Is there any way to view these using the xine framework? I want xine because konqueror uses it for the video thumbnails, which I really like. I would prefer not to use w32codecs if at all possible. I'm attaching a VERY short (1second) sample video if some Kubuntu 7.04 user would be so kind as to take a look. Please note that I gave it a .MPG extension to get through the filter in these forums, but it was originally an .AVI file.

    Thanks a lot!

    My findings:

I can get it to work with Mplayer no problem (that may be because I have Win32 codecs installed).

The only way I seem to be able to get it to play in Kaffeine is if I use the mplayer engine.

Hmmm, thanks for the reply! And which package would make w32 codecs in Xine? I think that's the trick then.

Here kaffeine (xine) is playing with green horizontal lines (lower half).
        I have w32 installed.

        Kaffeine tells:
        Video motion JPEG (ffmpeg)

        VLC/mplayer is playing fine.

        about w32:

        Hmm - You could try:

        Cerkinfo Debian Repository
        http://apt.cerkinfo.be/

        or

http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ -> sources list: deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ sarge main or
Direct link: http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/w/w32codecs/ -> w32codecs_20061022-0.0_i386.deb (13.6M) download and install it.

        Hmm #2 - Do you have libxine-extracodecs installed ?

I want xine because konqueror uses it for the video thumbnails
        I haven't tried this but...

        MPlayerThumbs
        http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show...?content=41180
        Description:
MPlayerThumbs is a thumbnail generator for video files on Konqueror.
Unlike the original konqueror plugin (in my gentoo box is artsplugin-xine), it DOESN'T depend neither on xine nor arts, instead it uses only mplayer.
You can take advantage of this on x86_64 systems, where you can use a 32bit mplayer to load win32codecs. To configure the location of your mplayer binary launch mplayerthumbsconfig.
Also it's faster than the xine plugin, since it can seek and play only a limited number of frames.
It catches a random frame from 15% to 70%, checking also how contrasted is the image, and dropping bad frames.
