Kb3 destroys my CD/DVD-R's

I'm having problems burning CD's and DVD using Kb3. I have tried both writing CD's and DVD's and I've tried lowering the burn speed. The funny thing is that I don't get an error message - the program just states that there was a successful burn and closes the CD/DVD. The problem is that the disks turn out to be completely blank, with nothing on them. I can't burn anything on them again though, so I guess the closing process works. Before I installed Kubuntu a couple of weeks ago, the burner worked fine (using Windows XP).

Anyone else have this problem or have a clue? Is this a Linux problem or is it just the program? I vaguely remember trying another program with the same result.

Hi,

I have been using k3b for years and it works fine, which does point to a problem with your CD/DVD burner.

When I say problem, if you are burning data discs without using the correct settings then the disc will not be recognized in windows, if you burn with 'no-multisession' then you cannot append files to a cd later-it will finalize the disc.

Assuming you have all the correct settings, then your burner appears to have a problem with linux in some way. This is very unusual these days, so get the make/model details of the burner and go from there.

Okay, I am having the same issue: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105.

when trying to burn data cd / DVD k3b gives me an error and tells me to burn in dao mode. Trying that gives me another error telling to burn tao mode. Which of course is BS. The cd is trashed and useless after all this.

Burning in edgy (and the prior version of k3b) is flawless.

Have any of you tried Brasero burning tool. It's in the repositories.

I also am having K3B problems. I tried the above app, along with baker and a few others. However, whenever I write a DVD+R it gives NO errors, verifies data, and the track appears written on the disk. However, doing a drive cycle in Kubuntu brings no mount, no files, and no joy. My XP box can not read the DVD either.

Also, I am running Feisty, K3b 1.0, KDE 3.5.6, the drive is a DVD-RAM GSA-4163b.

I streamed the files to an XP box, and wrote 3.5GB successfully that way. I just wanted to make sure the files were aok.

Anyhoo, I am still unable to write DVD's with Kubuntu.

Does this problem relates only to DVDs? Because yesterday I burned a CD-R with a DivX movie on it and it was OK.

Presumably K3b is configured to automatically erase CD-RWs and DVD RWs?

Other possibility - Try burning as root by running kdesu k3b.

Yes Sky, it's only DVD's. I can write CD's that read in both nix and M$.

Liquid, these are not RW disks, however I tried one with no joy. Also, I tried it as root, and am having the same problem..

ggggggrrr... Seems like when you think you have a perfect linux box, there is ONE thing that sneaks up on you. LOL! Oh well, M$ still blows. heehee.

Hopefully this will be fixed in an update; since I am not the only one having this problem I'd think it's a legit bug, until then I'll stream it to the wifes DVD burner.

Also, I tried another DVD burner, no joy.

I figured out my K3B problem. It was Fuji DVD's. They'd burn fine in WinDO$, but not nix. I got a stack of Memorex DVD-R's and I've burned 6 out of 6 DVD's correctly.

Somewhere, in the not too distant past, I read an article that rated all the CD media for quality, and told where each was made and by whom. I can't find that article now. But I remember it prompted me to be more selective in my blank media purchases. I've been using Sony brand since then without problems. I've made a lot of "coasters" with the cheap stuff.

There was a problem with the new "wodim" driver during Feisty development, up through Beta, which rendered all CD burning impossible on my system (Asus IDE CD/DVD drive). I remember those TAO and DAO error messages, which were bogus. But it has been fine since the Feisty 7.04 release, both for K3b and Brasero, which I used just a couple of days ago. So my vote is that the drive/interconnect or else the blank CDs are the problem, not Kubuntu or K3b.

I tend to agree after my x-periance. I just mad another 4GB Dada DVD and all went perfect. Well, except that my GSA-4163B only burns at 4x, but that is a firmware boggle and not nix. To update it IMHO would take more work than it's worth. I'd have to remove drives, swap cables, and other stuff. I'll wait until a RAM/Video upgrade, and do it while I've the box opened.
