Firefox crashes: is Feisty a lemon?

    Hi,

I've been using Kubuntu since the Breezy days, and this morning I was quite excited when I installed Feisty (I did a clean install). Everything was mostly fine, with one big exception: Firefox. It crashes all the time: I can barely use it for 10 minutes without it going kaputt on me! Now, I need it for my work (I'm a web developer), so I absolutely must have a Firefox that can last at least 10 minutes...

I searched launchpad, and there are already some other people reporting the some problem. My gut feeling is that since most Kubuntu users probably rely on Konqueror more, this might have passed unnoticed until now.

Anyway, my question is: is this also happening on your system? And can someone suggest any thing to resolve the problem? Though I love Kubuntu, I really need a functional and up-to-date Firefox installation...

    Thanks,
    Jean

I'm not having the crashes you've got with firefox. But I guess the crashes could be related with the combination of the gtk-qt-engine and the polyester style. Does firefox crash with the plastic style?

      Hey,

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that possibility.

However, I am using the Plastik theme -- I switched away from the default immediately after the install. But I'll try using another theme instead and see if that's indeed the problem...

      Cheers,

I don't understand this one at all. Firefox has been running on my Kubuntu Feisty system since Herd 4, and I reinstalled everything when Beta version came out, and have updated about daily, and on my Ubuntu 64-bit system since 7.04 was released. I have a really long bookmark list, which I export and then re-import when I do a new installation of the OS. There are all kinds of sites and databases and things in there. I did grab the msttcorefonts package for both systems -- don't know if that would explain my lack of trouble or not. And I'm not smart enough to do fancy customizations -- on a good day I can install the Flash plugin for the 32-bit (Kubuntu) Firefox. The hardware is all Intel, with Nvidia graphics card. I looked at the launchpad links -- looks like they are hard at work chasing it.

Firefox (Swiftfox actually) run on my box flawlessly. Perhaps you should try Swiftfox.

            Hi,

I am now running Polyester instead of Plastik, but Firefox still crashes...

I would consider using Swiftfox -- but does it support the Firefox addons?

            Cheers,

It's basically Firefox optimized for Linux.

                Hey,

I did a google search for Swiftfox, and I noticed that the license is "problematic". You could have mentioned that before you recommended the program...

For what it's worth, I have no trouble with Firefox on Fiesty. Konqueror, however, is giving me grief with its toolbars, but that's a different post. I'm on an AMD Athlon 3000+, but I'm using the x86 build, and I installed Fiesty from the upgrade (in other words, not a clean slate installation).

FF has been running fine for me as well, but here's a couple of things you might want to try:

Remove or deactivate any extensions one at a time. You might find that one is causing the problems.

Plug-ins: look in the directory where the plugins are installed and move the plugin files to a temporary location one at a time. You might have one that's buggy or needs an update.

The thind thing you can do is just to download FF from the mozilla site and install it to a new location (I always use /opt/firefox). Download the necessary plugins (get the latest versions, just in case you don't have them) and copy/install/link them to the new plugin folder. Test it out and see if you have problems.

Re: Firefox crashes: is Feisty a lemon?

I get firefox crashes as well. It doesn't always happen but when it does it is primarily when I am posting here and especially when I hit the return key.

Thankfully I can restore the session and retain most of what I have typed.

                      Very annoying, though.

                        Hey,

                        And thanks for your help!

I have tried Swiftfox, and it crashes as well -- therefore I assume the problem is not in the Firefox binary but in some of the libraries and/or fonts.

As for Firefox, I removed all plugins/addons/extensions. I went as far as deleting the entire $HOME/.mozilla directory and running Firefox "fresh". It still crashes very often. I even tried running Firefox in safe-mode, and it still crashes...

What is positively weird is that it run mostly fine in Edgy. There is something about Feisty that makes Firefox go kaputt... Does someone know if something profound changed with Firefox between Edgy and Feisty?

I am now using Konqueror, and it works fine for basic browsing. However, I can't live without Firebug, and therefore I really need Firefox...

                        Cheers,
                        Jean

I just got Swiftfox, and the first thing it did was to crash! So, I'm inclined to agree that somewhere along the line Feisty and Firefox don't get along too well.

Blast! it just crashed again when I hit return! Grrrr!

I have spent the last few days upgrading 85 Pc's from Win 2K to Feisty with FF (all of our apps run on a browser) & I haven't had 1 support call! for that fact I have had only a couple of calls from Windows zealots complaining about not being able to install the games 8) FF is very stable in Feisty

                              Here's another suggestion.

Try running firefox from a console. Bring up a terminal and run the firefox startup command from there. This may enable you to see any error messages in the terminal window the next time it quits.
