    Taskbar and K button gone

I had just set up the task bar to auto hide and it was working fine, dissappearing and reappearing when the mouse moved down to the bottom of the screen.

I came back to the machine about 5 hours later, and now the task bar does not pop up anymore. The machine had been on all the time.

A cold reboot does not cure the problem.

I have searched this forum for taks bar related topics, but have not seen anything regarding this, even a google search did not find anything

    What do I try next.

    Thanks

    Neil

How did you configure it to disappear and reappear?

Right click on it and properties I think,

Cant check at the moment though...for obvious reasons

What I think is that you can get to that config menu from another part too.
Try Alt + F1. Is the K menu displayed? Go to system settings if so.

          OK thanks

          Alt+ F1 worked.

You then say to go to the System Settings. What am I to do there? I cant immediately see anything relating to the taskbar

          Thanks

I don't know precisely, but I'd say go to Desktop settings. There has to be a section where you can config your taskbar.

If Alt+F1 worked so will Alt+F" then type either kontrol or kcmshell panel.
Kontrol is a bit more advanced than system config. and kcmshell panel should take you straight to your pannel config.

              Hope this helps

                Alt+F"
                is that Alt+F2
to bring up the run command window?

Typing kontrol then hitting run, brings up an error message
"Could not run the specified command"

                and kcmshell

the run window just disappears and nothng else happens.

tried both commands in a konsole window, but kontrol brought up the error message command not found

and kcmshell brought up a the usage options of kcmshell.

managed to get back to the taskbar hiding menu by right click on the taskbar, so at least that is back and working again.

                Thanks for the help

There seams to be more than meets the eye here. with Alt+F2 kontrol should come up, if not then it probably isn't installed. I forget if is by default. Anyway it is not kcmshell but "kcmshell panel" that deffinately should work in Alt+F2 or in the terminal.

well glad you got your taskbar back

You are probably correct there! It is a totally clean install, and I have change nothing apart from taskbar.

                    thanks for all your help.

Think i may do an instal of edgy now anyway. Come back to feisty when the samba problems are ironed out

                    Thanks

I guess you wanted to access kcontrol.
