    Good DVD Player?

Any one know a good DVD player?

I have few DVDs (DVD5 and DVD9) and Kaffeine doesn't play them.

I have installed some "ogle" - DVD player..
But I don't really like it.. It plays DVDs but don't have any menus or what not.

Kaffeine is THE best player around. It can also receive Satellite I just experienced HDTV on my Kaffeine recently with my Skystar2 DVB card....WOW>

DVD's should not be a problem. You probably do not have the css codecs installed and therefore it cannot read encrypted dvds.

    go to: http://debian-multimedia.org/pool/main

and scroll down to /libd directory.

then look for libdvdcss and pick up the file that coresponds with your architecture eg i386 or amd64 etc. Do not get the ~-dev file.

download it in your home directory and then go to it with Konqueror and right click on it then choose "Kubuntu package menu" > Install package
It will ask for your password and then install the package.

After this start Kaffeine and it should rock. I am yet to see a DVD that cannot be played by Kaffeine.

    Take care

        NO!
        it's another architecture.

I think you may be missing some more libraries

        Open adept and type libdvd

it will display some files: you need all installed except the ones with -dev which are for development purposes.

        libdvdnav4
        libdvdplay0
        libdvdread3

        libdvdcss2 should appear already installed.

Make sure you turn off kaffeine and back on. No need for computer reboot.

        good luck

PS: are you on amd 64?

            Re: Good DVD Player?

            Let's step back a little:

When u put the dvd in does it mount? meaning that an icon appears on the desktop with the name of the movie?

If not the problem is not with kaffeine.

If yes we gotta keep digging.

I have to go to sleep now but I will return tomrw.

Please check that u have some more files installed: Open adept, type xine in the search box and check with the picture attached
            Attached Files

              The thing is....

I heard somewhere on this forum about VLC player.
              http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

And it play DVD fine, without any problems. (I tried several DVDs...)

I guess I could use it.

But still I am interested why Kaffeine is not working.

One thing I can tell u for sure is that Kaffeine works very well.

Have u looked at the previous posting with the xine search?

                  Re: Good DVD Player?

yes. But xine is like a lib file? or like a player?

Since when I search for "xine"
it gives large list of file. Maybe I should post them here...

I am not sure which one I need...

                    Re: Good DVD Player?

I'm having exactly the same problem, on VLC, DVD's play just fine. On Kaffeine its a completely different thing.
The problem is happening on another machine and its a fresh install. On the one that had Edgy and the updates has been performed the problem don't occurred.
I think it's something related to the video driver (on the one that have the problem the video it's integrated and is using vesa)
I will keep checking this tomorrow since it's a little late here and I have a class tomorrow morning.

C ya and Good Luck (Please keep us informed)

                      Re: Good DVD Player?

your problem might be right there:
No plugin found to handle this resource (dvd:///dev/hda)
are you sure your dvd drive is hda? double check to make sure the right device is specified.

                        Re: Good DVD Player?

You do not have all xine libraries.

Please look at the image I posted previously and make sure you install the same files as I have.

Oh.. Oops I missed the image you posted.

PS. I installed them.. And it all works now

Subtitles a bit messed up... I mean they work but.. The Keffeine change them around. Like under "en" there is nothing, but under "nl" you see english subs etc..

                          But DVDs work.

                            Re: Good DVD Player?

It does happen to me as well not to completely read the postings. Bad habit...

libxine-ffmpeg is the one supposed to support mpeg formats (as the name implies)

There is a list: kaffeine-users@lists.sf.net if I am not mistaken where u can go and get more advice. It may be another library I don't know about dutch subtitles. I do know that Kaffeine and Xine are made in Europe and I assume they take good care of subtitles.

As a general advice since it sounds you are a freshman in Linux.
What I do is to have a list of things to do when I install Kubuntu. I like to do fresh installs every time a new release is out. This way I "clean" my drives up.

There is an entire procedure and u can find a copy of my one here:
                            http://metricus.dyndns.org:8080/inst...uctions_Feisty
It includes the needs for multimedia files.

If u are on AMD 64 you will also need the advice on flash plugin as there is none in 64-Kubuntu. The use of nspluginwrapper is the only decent way around this issue. See also my posting here:
                            http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...;topicseen#new

Good luck and welcome to the club...

                              This is what I get

I'm downloading the xine plugins, plus I just enabled the Medibuntu repos in order to get more updates, I''ll let you know about the results
