    Re: kooka not working

@meticus. No, you are not blind but it is recocnized and works without hassle in edgy. Actually better than in win. The question is why does it work there and not here

      Re: kooka not working

Well if you say it's a known bug then there is no reason to keep debating here.
This is the wrong place to report bugs
If you just confirm the bug on Launchpad they will take care of it.

In your place I would try again to reinstall and to install the Avasys driver without tinkering with other files like epson.d and remember:

DO NOT install libsane-extras if you want the avasys driver to work. Just install your system and then the avasys driver.

Fintan: I just explained why this is possible in my previous post. In windows the manufacturers pay programmers to make sure that each driver is updated to match new OS releases . In linux nobody does this unless there is a bunch of volunteers who support a project like sane. They will only take care of their listed hardware. Posting reports about not working un-supported hardware is pointless.

        Re: kooka not working

Thanks, I know all about win drivers, etc. That is still not the question.
Again: why does it work "out of the box" with edgy (kooka, Xsane) and not in Feisty?
That is all we wanted to know. The only reason I got into this was because it seamed to be "another" thing that works in edgy and not in Feisty (at least for me, and I wanted to find out why.
I love feisty and that is not even the point either.

I don't know if it is know bug or not, and you are right it is pointless discussing here, so no worrys

and again: Because nobody supports it. An OS developer does not worry about each piece of equipment supposed to work with that OS. That is the job of the driver manufacturers. And since there is no driver manufacturer....a new OS could mean non working hardware.
People are used from windows with backwards compatibility but do not realize that this is achieved at great costs through new drivers for new systems.

Here you have a new system but no new driver. It's simple.

            Fenix-TX:
My feeling is that your scanner should work since it is listed at Avasys. I would sincerely try again to reinstall feisty and then to directly install the Avasys Iscan. Do not make any other modifications and do not install libsane-extras as they are incompatible with the avasys driver somehow.

If it still does not work write to avasys as they are the only ones supporting this scanner.

            good luck

              Re: kooka not working

Just as a parenthisis, I am blind.
My scanner is supported (benq 1240)
Doesn't make any difference. Still works in edgy so I guess for my samba, scanning stuff I'll just boot into edgy until this gets resolved by people more intelligent than me

well... u listed another number before.

If it is supported than you should definitely let those people at sane know about it. That is indeed a problem.
And also report the bug at ubuntu just in case. The bug may be on either side.

My first feeling is that if the scanner is listed under lsusb but not found by sane it is a sane problem and not ubuntu's but I am not a specialist.

In what concerns samba I am clueless...I don't use it!

                  Re: kooka not working

I'm ashamed. I have to apologize to metricus. First, i was not the reason, and my comments are wrongs. My problem was that upgrading, there are files that are wrong, in particullary the files that are on /etc/saned.d/dll.d/

                  hplip
                  libsane-extras
I've edited those files and i commented all the contents (i don't know if it's necessary comment all, but works).

So there is no bug, the only problem is upgrading, perhaps i have to see all the possibilitys before said some comments.

                  Sorry metricus

In other hand, my scanner works now.

                    Re: [SOLVED]kooka not working

I would attempt a fresh install. You will be surprised.
It appears that your scanner does not need a non-free plugin therefore should work out-of-the box.

This is how mine works just fresh install and all programs can control the scanner.

I do love my fresh installs. They generally fix a lot of issues.

But do take my advice and try Iscan. You will see a great difference of scan quality. Kooka is like out of focus. Iscan generates very real images. Even Xsane cannot match that crispness for some reason...

All is well that ends well...
