    Linux PROTECTED?

Just seeking a better understanding of what makes linux a better operating system. Forgive my ignorance, but from what I have herd and have seen, is Linux really un-hackable?

How is it safer than windows?
How about all these worms, viruses, spam, personal information that we fear with windows..do they effect linux os?

Is there a command in linux (feisty fawn beta user) to view all port connections? in windows, you can do a netstat -a to get port access.

Nothing is un-hackable. Nothing. That said, Linux benefits greatly from open code review and fixes for exploits seem to be released much faster.

A windows virus, much like your favorite game, won't run under Linux because it was written specifically for Windows.

Now... you can get lots of great games to run in Linux by using Wine... but it's still not so great at running viruses. Exploits designed to cause Outlook Express to run Windows trojans aren't going to work in Thunderbird and other Linux mail programs.

Linux also benefits from being a minority. Who are virus-writers going to target: Linux, or that other OS that is used by 99-times more people... a great deal of whom are less tech-savy?

Have you tried "netstat -a"? Netstat wasn't invented by Microsoft - it was originally part of BSD, another Unix-variant like Linux.

Another GREAT network tool is gnome-nettool. It has netstat built in along with many other network administrative tools.

Yep, it will run in Kubuntu! Just go to AdeptManager and put that name in the filter and it will show up. Tell it to Install it and there you go. It really is a great tool. It will appear in the start menu under Settings.

Yes, click on the KMenu icon and then to the Settings submenu. I still call it a Start Menu , that I do not think will ever go away.
