Basically, the easy install that Ubuntu has, is NOT AVAILABLE for Kubuntu. Lets hope it is for Gusty Gibbon 7.10.
I found the install for Kubuntu (which I did yesterday) to be quite easy.

Basically, I configured by Nvidia card for composite and one other thing (I'm not in front of it right now). Then I installed beryl and the other packages from apt-get. I restarted X, then put beryl-manager in my startup. From there I proceeded to install themes, change settings, etc.

Re: Beryl & Kubuntu... is it easy to set it up?

Welllllllll ... that's putting it pretty harshly, I'd say (what EMoShunz said on Ubuntu Forum). I have Beryl installed and working for 2 weeks now on my Kubuntu Feisty 32-bit system, and also my Ubuntu Feisty 64-bit system. Intel X6800 CPU, Intel mainboard, Nvidia GeF 7900 GS PCI card. Here is what is true for 2 weeks:

The nvidia-glx-new driver package is about as easy as it gets, assuming your remembered to get your linux-restricted-modules package first. Beryl is very stable on Kubuntu 32-bit system, but I did have to install it with Adept. Nvidia driver is happy to accept my resolution setting of 1600x1200, auto refresh, and overclocking if I choose. Beryl automatically loads and runs at bootup. Skydome enabled, wobbly windows, my custom wallpaper, Emerald's dark red windows decorator, no end caps, blah blah. The only bug I can find is that when I choose (in the Beryl Manager) the "Quit" menu item, the panel icon disappears but Beryl is still active. So, at the next boot, I get a "crash error notification", which is always "Beryl crashed". Just a feature, I guess. I haven't tried Compiz installed on Kubuntu -- I don't know if it would be easy or not.

On Ubuntu 64-bit, things are a little more ragged. Same easy installation of nvidia-glx-new, but if you happen to want the 64-bit driver, you have to do the manual installation of the downloaded driver, and I've had inconsistent results with that process. It is true that in Ubuntu there is an "x" box to choose "Desktop 3D Effects". I admit -- I haven't tried that one, but I'm told it will give me Compiz. The Nvidia driver will not accept my resolution setting for a new default setting -- apparently it does not write it into xorg.conf, even though I use "sudo nvidia-settings" to open the driver utility. It will run at 1600x1200 for the session, but on re-boot, I still get 1280x1024. I installed Beryl from the Feisty repos, same as I did for the 32-bit OS, and it runs. But, the windows decorator breaks regularly, and at times Emerald won't provide the decorator and I have to use Gnome Metacity to get borders. Other times it is fine.

So, it's not universally true that "Gnome has KDE beat in desktop effects". It's just the opposite at my house.

Same here! Install was a breeze and it has been operational for nearly 2 weeks.

Re: Beryl & Kubuntu... is it easy to set it up?

This is exactly my point guys. Your saying it's easy, all you have to do is download this, enable that, configure something else.....
Whereas the GNOME version just has you checking a box. Done.
My mom can do the second, I might be able to do the first, but is it really worth all the effort, maybe, but look at OSX and Vista, install it and your done.
Please don't think I'm bashing, I'm not, just would like it to be a truly easy install, not an easy install for a guy who's been messing with Linux for 10 years.

I am sorry to beg to differ.
Vista is a 10bn$ 5year project that is still not working.
Unless you have the HW to run it. Which 50% of the people don't. And even then.. as an example dell is going back to winxp

MAcosX is great for what it is worth. But...£££

Beryl/compiz or the fusion of both is beta!!!

and is still more usefull to people like me running a ati 9250 pro card (20$)

I couldn't dream of rung vista in all it'so called glory with that card.

Yes, you are probably rhight, ubuntu is still the prefed dist. in the XYZtuntu univers. But it it works.

I spent hours yesterday installing vista+drivers, etc. on a "vista compatable" machine gave up installed kubuntu, gave him beryl and he is a happy trucker.

Re: Beryl & Kubuntu... is it easy to set it up?

Don't get me wrong, I MUCH prefer Kubuntu to anything else. What I'd like to see is OSXI running on a Linux core based on a KDE(4) interface with Qt4+.
And Vista (ME v. 2.0) is a waste. I was just trying to point out that the visuals (in theory) work out of the box.

and I'll happily agree on that point -- I'm living for the day when the new ATI or Nvidia or Intel graphic card comes with a driver CD that has a Linux auto-detector-installer alongside the Microsoft crap. THEN we will have something for the masses!

Re: Beryl & Kubuntu... is it easy to set it up?

Yeah, right. Jobs and linux. :P
Maybe when kde4 comes out he will integrate into osx. Why not?
Sure the visuals work out of A box. But which one? And as far as a lot of people not connected with this fine community are concerned they don't. Period.

I am not bashing win, i need it every day for web developement (adobe/macromedia) but..... kubuntu with all of its little faults is still far superiour.
andby the way bery, vista(aero) is not that much more productive than just moving your mouse left or or right to change desktops

Sure it (beryl) is sexy, no doubt. But primetime? No. Give it and contribute (ideas, feedback, etc) 4-5months, probably.

                  Cheers
