    Choppy sound

I'm having big problems with my sound that is really choppy when I play mp3 files and CD's. OSS/ALSA was already installed with Kubuntu and these drivers, if I haven't completely misunderstood, should support my M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 card. The only thing I can think of that could be causing problems are the processes ”Xorg” and ”ksysguard” that sometimes take up a lot of CPU. I have tried to alter the config file for Xorg, but there is no difference. I have an AMD Athlon 1 GHz processor and 640 MB of RAM so I don't think there should be any problem with playback when I don't something else in the meantime.

    Can anyone help me?

    Thanks.

      Re: Choppy sound

I am trying to remember if I saw an issue like this in the zenwalk forums. I can't remember if this turned out to be a software issue or a driver problem. Is there a specific program in which you hear the noise? Or do you hear the noise every time an mp3 is played?

        Re: Choppy sound

I've tried playing mp3's with both XMMS and VLC media player and they both sound really bad. I've upgraded Kubuntu and installed additional ALSA applications but I still have the same problem.

Also, I've tried changing the nice value for the XMMS process to -20 but there is still no difference.

                Re: Choppy sound

Thanks, but that's not the problem. It's mainly when I run Firefox or Swiftfox when the sound gets choppy, but it also occurs when resizing a window or scrolling inside a window in Konqueror (for instance).

A friend of mine said he had a similar problem under Debian several years ago and that recompiling the kernel solved the problem. He couldn't be more specific as of what to do as he hasn't used Linux for a couple of years now. Do you think he's right? How should I proceed?

I take it that you have worked your way through this guide?

                      Re: Choppy sound

On a new install, I had a crackling sound on a VIA Technologies, Inc. 82xx chip that would go away every once in a while if the drivers were changed.

After finding that the PCM tab controlled master volume in Multimedia --> Alsamixergui and finding no changes there that would help, I finally found the following and it worked immediately. It's worth a try.

<----- edit - the below did work immediately, but then the problem recurred. So it isn't the solution... Sorry!

"Looks like going to 'System Settings' --> 'Sound System', choosing the hardware tab, select 'Use custom sampling rate' and entering 96000 instead of the default may have fixed it. Could be an off by one error in a lookup table or something."

                      -------- that didn't provide a permanent fix ------------ /edit>
