    Kernel Sources and Module Compilation

Okay, so I'm looking to develop some custom kernel modules. To be fair, it's at the behest of my professor. In any event, I tried to do it on an Edgy install and managed (through rushing and not paying attention) to bork my kernel. Not a big deal, that's why we back up, right?

Fast foward to now. After some installation oil -- to wit, some good Shiraz -- I decided that I should run with the Herd. Bad wordplay aside, I think my problem earlier arose from poor execution on a kernel-source install.

Here is my question: What sort of packages need I install that would allow me to compile and load my own kernel modules. I know that the ins/ls/whatevermod bits are included, but I kept getting some fairly awful errors before.

After installing the sources, do I need to do a 'make menuconfig' or anything? Hell, I'll build a kernel if I must, but I'd rather not.

Any help is very much appreciated.
