Hi,

Not sure if this will help but it did for me whenever I had problems installing/removing pkgs.

"if having problems with removing and installing check here for problem pkg ...
cd /var/lib/dpkg/info look for offending pkg and rename."

What I ended up doing was to renaming the .postrm and .postinst files and then reruning the apt-get upgrade.

there is a total of about 1500 files with the extension .postrm and .postinst in the folder. which ones?

Hi,

I would just go with your list of failures above. Or if your feeling brave, make a backup of those filesas they are now, then just rm *.postrm and rm *.postinst then apt-get upgrade.
I don't know if you tried this yet but you can do sudo apt-get -f install and see if that fixes it also.

that did not work, still getting the same error of Kubuntu-desktop was impossible to install

Hmmmmm.

I remember when I went from "edgy" to "feisty" I took a different route. I edited my sources.list and replaced all the "edgy" with "feisty" and commented out the "extra repositories" and just ran sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. It's kind of a brute force way of doing it but I had no problems with it (maybe I was just lucky).
As for your current problem, I really can't think of anything else to try at this point except maybe just reload from a feisty (kubuntu) cd.

I tried that is it got about halfway and failed. Now I have reinstalled edgy fresh, and I am going to try again. This way I don't have any funny software or codecs that might be getting in the way. the burning functionality f my drive is going out, can read CDs and DVDs no problem, just has problems writing, trying to not HAVE to burn a new CD if possible.

Now I have totally screwed the pooch on this one. Since I am at work right now, I have had to use the apt-get commands instead of the nice GUI so I can get through the proxy here. after doing apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade, I no longer can get into KDE. put me at the command line interface. I've looked at the xinitrc and xorg.conf and cannot find anything amiss

Although xorg.conf looks to be OK you may still want to run this at the command line to "rebuild" that file. It's worth a shot. For the most part I usually choose the defaults that it suggests during this process.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Yeah seems the last set of "updates" really messed my video up bad. Had to go with plain vesa driver to get any gui at all.

ah ha, now we got that working (thank you much MoonRise), and Feisty Fawn installed, oddly though, I have the old entry in Grub, and the new entry that Feisty added, if I chose the one Feisty add, it errors out and puts me at a prompt, not to even log in. when I load the one that was for my system BEFORE installing feisty and it boots fine, any thoughts? I don't really care, since I can just remove those two entries, just curious. If that makes no sense, I'll clarify if needed

you can ignore that last post, I did a apt-get dist-upgrade, not it is to 15, and loads from that fine, so I'll just remove the other entries from Grub
