Re: error committing changes in adept

K, Will try this when I get home (late day) But I gotta few questions. What is acpid? Will I need to stop it every time I try to update?

Can't wait to get samba running.

      http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/admin/acpid
its power-management stuff, and normally when upgrading that package, it should stop and restart that daemon during the upgrade, as it did for my system. I don't think it will be necessary unless the problem happens again (and with that particular bit), but stopping it s not going to hurt anything.

Well I tried the above commands, and it worked once. Then trying to run adept again today (days later) It pooped on me. This time I can see the one file it is choking on. It is trying to upgrade linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic. Same pop up message box. But this time the above mentioned fix isn't working.
        ant2ne@ant2ne-laptop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop

I can assume that this is because the process was already stopped and patched once.

Then running sudo dpkg --configure -a
        ant2ne@ant2ne-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

Looked like a few error messages in the beginning, but then a string of OKs make one think everything is OK. Wrong. running adept to fetch updates still puts linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic on the update list.

        And then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
        ant2ne@ant2ne-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Re: error committing changes in adept

I think they have pulled this new kernel as a lot of people are unable to boot with it, and I think this has just happened as it was available this morning, but it looks like they haven't removed the info from the package list, or a fix is being uploaded (I hope)

            But normally
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?
is what you would need to try in this sort of error.

In any case, don't boot to this new kernel if you get it installed until we know it is useable

Re: error committing changes in adept

Actually I've seen more updates but ADEPT keep crashing. I figured out what was causing it. The linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic was causing the problem. Since I saw newer versions just a few moments ago, I just told Adept Updater to disregard it and it was able to download and install everything else. I then rebooted to make sure that I didn't get effected like some others have with not being able to boot and all is well. At least for me.

Re: error committing changes in adept

Interestingly, when I updated my 32-bit Kubuntu tonight, it remains a 2.6.20-14 kernel. But after I did the same thing with my 64-bit Ubuntu, it installed 2.6.20-15, and changed Grub accordingly. But there is an upgrade to the 2.6.20-14 kernel that is held back, for both systems. Funny. But everything still works fine.

Well, I must admit that I destroyed my Feisty installation yesterday. Since I have the Feisty DVD, I'm performing a fresh install at this moment. No data was lost since I have everything on a diff HDD. Is there something that I should be worried about whit the updates already available?

You shouldn't be. I just did an update and all is well. Even the"inux-image-2.6.20-14-generic" pkg was removed so i didn't have to worry about telling adept manager to ignore it.

while we are on the subject, sorta, how do I get rid of all the extra options in GRUB. I don't need version 9 or 13 or 14 if I'm on to 15 etc. But GRUB is keeping them as options.

I think the pros say to "comment", i.e. put a # and a space in front of each line that is not wanted. Noobs like me open it in su mode and delete the unwanted stuff and resave the menu.list.
