    feisty 64

    Hi,

Is there a migration route from 32 bit feisty to 64 bit feisty? To explain, I have upgraded my system to a 64bit mobo from a 32bit mobo. The 32 bit version is working fine but I want to know if I can just upgrade or if I need to reload to get to 64 bit.
    Thanks

From my point of view the 64 bits version still needs some work in order to work at 100% (flash, codecs, and so on)
What I would suggest is a 32 bits installation on that 64 bits hardware, in any case the actual 64 bits version will not offer a great improvement on the performance side. That's what I did and my system is running perfectly with Feisty Fawn

      Re: feisty 64

As an exercise in proving the obvious, yesterday I installed the 64-bit Beta version on my Intel X6800 platform, which I only recently realized uses the EM64T architecture which supports running 64-bit Linux. It installed just fine and is running great as I write this.

I first set it up with VESA graphics, then got all the updates and upgrades installed, and then installed nvidia-glx, ran
      Code:
      sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
, restarted the xserver and got that beautiful new Nvidia driver splash screen, then installed Beryl and Firefox and such. It's all pretty flawless as far as I can tell, with the common apps anyway.

However, I did a little benchmark test with my favorite 32-bit applications, and of course I proved beyond all doubt that they run the same or slower on the 64-bit OS as they do on the 32-bit system.

So, the answer is, "yes" you can have a 64-bit OS if you want, but "no" your 32-bit apps won't run any faster at all. I have the data to prove it.

well it seems I have some decisions to make right now. I got a new video card today. A gforce 7300GT 512 and I was so excited when I got it that I just poped it into the pc and low and behold I now have a text base system.
Not really sure what I did (or didn't do) but I can't get the card going in graphics mode. I had the 1.0.9755 nvidia driver installed but had to remove it earlier because I didn't have the video card (I was using the on board from my asus m2v-mx mobo. which of course there are no linux drivers for.
Now when I try to reinstall the nvidia drivers (either free or propriatory) all I get is errors. So I still have my 32 bit install but no video...... SIGH................

I did forget to mention that the system refuses to see the pcie card. I have to put it in pci mode for it to come up at all
For grins I downloaded and burned the feisty 64 bit iso but it crashes on boot up with can't access tty....... SIGH............

I will tell you my sequence for getting great graphics on my Nvidia 7900GS (PCI card) in case this helps.

            1. Install Feisty in VESA graphics mode (no auto-detecting!).
            2. Use Adept to update/upgrade everything to current packages. (Make sure you got linux-restricted package for your kernel).
            3. Use Adept to install nvidia-glx package.
            4. In the console run sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
            5. Re-start the xserver (Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace)
            6. Run sudo nvidia-settings, click "Xserver Display Information", and set my monitor to my chosen resolution and refresh rate. Then click "Save to X Configuration File", and let it write its changes.
            7. Manually edit xorg.conf to add "Option" "Coolbits" "1" in the "Device" stanza, so I can overclock my card.
            8. Re-start the xserver and in the console run nvidia-settings (no "sudo") and make sure it comes up in the requested resolution and refresh, and everything looks correct, and that "Clock Frequencies" now appears as an option in the menu.
            9. Open Adept Manager and install Beryl (which will automatically bring in Emerald).
            10. After Beryl is installed, in a console window type "beryl-manager" which should run Beryl.

            Then ....... enjoy!

              Hi dibl,

Thanks but I am stuck in limbo. I can do an install cause the cd's just hang. I am not familiar with installing plain vanilla "vesa" drivers. Can you walk me through it from a booted system?
              thanks

Can you boot the live CD and get the installation menu?

                  Re: feisty 64

when I boot the cd, it gets as far as asking me if I want to install and when I click yes, it then errors out with
BusyBox v1.1.3 (a bunch of stuff here)

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

then thats it does nothing else.

                      Hi all,

Ok this is what I found to get it going again. It's an old fix I found for a different nvidia card but it worked.
I had to add the following to my xorg.conf file in the "screen" section.
                      Option "SWCursor"
                      Option "NoRemoteExtension"
That was after I reinstalled the nvidia 9755 drivers along with nvidia-glx. I am now running an old xorg.conf file that had some mods in it for beryl but alas beryl does not work. Well it works but it causes all kinds of erratic video behavior (and not the ones it's supposed to do). I will try to reinstall beryl but I want to just use my desktop again for awhile.
                      Thanks to all who helped......

                        You bet it ;-)

Well, it's a shame. Why built a 64 bits version if there is no REAL improvements at all and some common software (flash-player, etc.) missing yet!?

I have installed Kubuntu 64 bits in my laptop and even in the middle od an apt-get update it got stuck and did want to run software update any more. I had to re-install it :-(
But let's give it one more chance, before moving back to 32 bits...

                        Cheers!

Well, I did install the 64 bits version and now I have dual boot together with the 32 bits version. So far the 64 bits version is running perfect, codecs, plugins and so on are up and running
At this moment I'm burning a copy made with k9copy from an old movie that is going to get scratched and everything is going smoothly. :P

                            OK, that's fine.
And I found in the Adept list a flash animations viewer (Gnash SWF viewer for KDE), so now, Firefox can handle sites OK, as good as with a MM-FlashPlayer plug in installed
