Sorry about yet another Beryl thread but this is the 3rd time i have had to reinstall Kubuntu due to attempts at installing beryl.

I am new to all this so allways learning, i have followed many different guides and searched the forum on this and haven't found any one with the same problem as i so i am guessing i am doing it wrong or missing some thing out.

firstly i downloaded the latest Nvidia driver and installed that then i followed this guide,

after the section which states "3. Now Logout and then press [CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE] to restart xorg" kubuntu reboots -

The when loading up i cannot go no further all that happens is my screen stalls with a white flashing courser in the top left corners - this all so happened when trying to install my nvidia driver with Envy straight after i restarted the Xserver, obviously getting a bit sick of reinstalling kubuntu so if any one could give me a guide on this so i don't get the same problem as last time.

I am using the Kubuntu 7.4 feisty fully updated, My GFX card is a Nvidia Gforce 6800 gs xxx and i have downloaded the latest Nvidia driver - i haven't installed it yet just in case.

Ctrl-Alt F1 will get you to your console screen. This is a Kubuntu bug.

How sure are you that the Nvidia driver is 100% correct? Can you open the Nvidia utility and look at the Open GLX settings? You have no chance with Beryl unless the Nvidia driver is perfect -- trust me on that.

i just installed the latest nvidia driver by going into alt f1 then doing kdm stop then sudo sh then the driver name that then went into a blue and yellow screen where i then installed the nvidia driver then did kdm start command.

im now back in and now my screen savers work lol..

when going to the kdm menu - system - theres a Nvidia X server settings and in there i have my nvidia options.

im new to all this so you will have to tell me if thats correct

in there i have open gl options which i can change and seem to bee ok.

That sounds right. On your Nvidia X Server Setting utility, in the middle of the panel, there is an item titled "Open GL/GLX Information". Can you click that and then get a split window with the top one saying "GLX Information" -- it shows Direct Rendering and GLX Extensions? If you do, then perhaps you're ready to install Beryl.

If you're running Feisty, then I would suggest first removing Emerald, Acquamarine (if you have it), Heliodor (if you have it), and Beryl. Use the Adept Package Manger, and you can avoid the console command.

Then first install Emerald and Aquamarine and Heliodor (but it doesn't work for me -- it may be only for Gnome desktop). These are your Window Decorators. Once they are installed, mark Beryl for installation in Adept Manager, and go ahead and install it.

Upon completion of the installation, open a terminal window and enter:

sudo beryl manager

I forget whether it needs a hyphen -- it may be "beryl-manager". It will scan your system and report whether the Nvidia and Xserver setups are good to go. If so, you will need to restart X with Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace, and either Beryl will load itself, or you will need to right-click on the taskbar icon and choose "Window Manager>Beryl", and then "Reload Window Manager". That's it. Then you can break it by changing Window Decorator from Emerald to Heliodor -- remember, Beryl is not released software!

Hi,
I just went through this with beryl (today as a matter of fact). I did go to alt-F1 command line, stop kdm, Install the nvidia driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run which looks like you have already done that. I did not uninstall and reinstall the beryl apps. I did go to alt-F1 command line, stop kdm and then made a backup of my xorg.conf file. I then ran this command
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
it added that line to the xorg.conf file. I then started kdm, logged out of the terminal went back to my login screen and just for good measure did a cntrl-alt-backspace to restart the gui. I logged in and then started beryl.
It came right up at that point. Now your milage may vary but I too followed a lot of different ways to try to load beryl onto feisty but this way worked for me without a lot of churn.

Well I'm glad I didn't read this forum before making the slightly rash decision to give Feisty a go yesterday (been on Dapper 'till now as I thought Edgy, well err,,, sucked) otherwise I may not have made the leap.

It all loaded up fine and I followed the little script on the beryl site to install the nvidia drivers and beryl, hey presto it worked first time like a charm!

This is on an old Compaq Evo500 with a budget Nvidia 5200.

I have good feelings for Feisty.

Child
