Dear Kubuntu community,

What do you think of making the domino style available to Kubuntu Feisty?

I'm sending him an amd64 package so that more people can have access to it.

I would volunteer to do it myself if you point me to the right direction (in terms of what conventions I have to follow). I think it would be a good addition to the nice selection of styles we already have.

If you prefer I can also open a wishlist entry on launchpad.

Yes, I would very much like it be available for Kubuntu. It is a style that I personally like and use.

However, there's a problem. Feisty is in Feature Freeze . No new packages/features are accepted anymore. Which means that we can't request new packages for Feisty, and will probably have to wait for Feisty+1.

Another probably minor thing. Vanyar's efforts for providing a .deb package is very much appreciated. However, please be careful in installing packages generated from checkinstall. Checkinstall is not a very reliable way to create Debian packages that will be distributed. It may be ok for personal use, but may cause problems for other systems. I should commend vanyar for informing users that it was made from checkinstall.

Have fun with Domino! I'm still playing around with it. So far, I think the Nuvola icons go well with the Style, compared to Crystal SVG or even Oxygen. I'm still looking for a good window decoration to go with it.

Thanks for the quick and sincere feedback. You made good points there.

Even with Feature Freeze, I could go ahead and make the package, and keep it here or on kde-look till Feisty +1. It's not an essential package. I was now wondering if it would be worth/possible to put it on backports.

As soon as I get done with my exams, I can create a proper deb package. Checkinstall indeed ignores/skips a lot of details. For example, it doesn't ask for conflicting packages. I could unpack a couple of kde styles, see what's in ./debian, and learn from that.

Let me know if you know of some webpage which has guidelines for packaging. It would be nice to follow make it the debian (right) way.

By the way, after you mentioned I also downloaded some icon packages. Very nice that some of them are available in repositories. But did you say Oxygen? Where can I get it? : )

1. Oxygen will be the new icon/artwork theme for KDE 4. It's not distributed yet and the only method to get it would be to checkout from SVN.

2. Kubuntu comes with an Ubuntu Packaging Guide in the Help Center. Or you can download and print out a PDF copy from https://help.ubuntu.com/

I think the lack of additional styles available from the repositories is a problem (many people think it's difficult to theme kubuntu to their liking, because they may have to search for the debs, or worse yet, compile them themselves)

I think it would be a good idea to add a couple more styles to 'universe', just for easy installation, 'domino' and 'qtcurve' come to mind.

agreed. i compiled it myself quite a while back, but i didn't bother to create a deb package...

I don't know if I would use the theme, but I would love any more themes and styles in the repositories. I like installing apps and libs from the repos.

I'd love to see Domino as a choice for Kubuntu, it's the best theme I've seen in a long time and along with the Snowish Icon set has seen me turn my back on Crystal with OSL / Baghira icons.

It's not without it's problems though, it runs fine on my desktop but seems to be seriously unhappy with my Laptop (either using the .deb or self compiled!)

just on a side note, i've noticed there are a hell of a lot more gtk/2 themes in repos than kde themes/styles. correct me if i'm wrong, but thats what it seemed like to me when i looked. (cuz kubuntu is based on ubuntu which uses gnome which uses gtk, obviously. think thats why?)

Kubuntu and Ubuntu share the same repositories, so you can see and install packages for Ubuntu even if you're on Kubuntu.

I guess the primary reason why Ubuntu has more "themes" is because there are so few GTK2 engines available. It's a bit technical, but the "Styles" that you see in KDE-Look and in the System Settings are small programs that need to be compiled. These are equivalent to the gtk2-engines packages you can see in the repositories. The "themes" you see in GNOME-Look are just the equivalent of color schemes and some config files on KDE.

Now compare the number of gtk-engines available in the repository, and the number available in KDE-Look. You'll see that it's not really an easy task to package all of them.

Having said that, it would really be nice to have more packaged KDE Styles in the repositories. Hopefully that will happen after Feisty.

Hmm...if no one hasn't taken it up yet, I think I probably could whip up a couple of deb packages for a few additional styles. I haven't made ubuntu packages, but I'm familiar with the debian packaging process (and it shouldn't be much different).

AFAIK it's too late to get them into feisty, but likely doable for feisty+1. We'll see (as my attention span leaves something to be desired )

EDIT: Then again, as KDE4 is looming behind the corner...I wonder if it's worth it :P
