    Adobe Reader and Multimedia packages

    Hi All

Just upgraded to Feisty. In addition to the update issue reported by others, I can't seem to find the packages for Adobe Acrobat Reader or those we shouldn't speak of (libdvdcss and W32 codecs etc).

Anybody able to point me in the right direction please?

This is ubuntu_demon's Edgy Customization Guide.

It is for Edgy but seveas' repos seem to still work for Feisty. The only problem I'm having is that w32codecs aren't working for real audio in Amarok or VLC. The other proprietary media seems to be working though.

With KPlayer you will rarely need any win32 codecs at all. It uses MPlayer behind the scenes, and that includes nearly all the most common codecs and formats implemented natively on Linux. That makes it much more stable, and of course it's nice to now you are running free from any Windows stuff.

So that's why I always try to play everything in KPlayer first, and it nearly always works. The few times it doesn't work it's usually because I didn't give it the right link. Once I find the right one, KPlayer plays it fine.

Re: Adobe Reader and Multimedia packages

Thanks. I found a repository , http://seveas.imbrandon.com edgy-seveas custom extras seveas-meta, which provided me with the multimedia packages.

That leaves Acrobat Reader. Why is it no longer in the repositories I wonder? I have found debs that won't install and the adobe .gz file gives the following error when I try to extract

"gunzip: stdin: not in gzip format".

Anyone got any clue what's happening? Would I do better if I used the command line instead of Ark? If so, can anyone advise me of the command to use?

        Thanks

        Ian

I'm not sure about the Adobe thing Liquidator. I'm in the same situation. Normally I always use KPDF. I haven't had Acroread installed in forever, but I needed to install it today at work because KPDF couldn't a file. So I went to install acroread and it's not there. I did a search of the Ubuntu repos and it says that Acroread is in Edgy multiverse. I'm not too sure why it isn't in Feisty but maybe some packages won't be updated until release.

OK - sorted. I've installed the tar.gz.gz file from Adobe and frankly by comparison with the one I used in Edgy from the repositories - it flies

Here's what I did. Download the file and save it. Don't use Ark to extract it. Instead Navigate in Konqueror to the directory in which you saved it. Then launch a terminal and type :

sudo tar -xvvzf then drag the downloaded file icon into the terminal and on releasing select paste and hit return. Then type sudo sh AdobeReader/INSTALL and the installation process will start. Accept defaults and then set up the firefox plugins and you are done. Even puts an entry in the KDE menu and sets itself up as the default pdf application (but that may be because of the settings I already had).

Sorry to go on, but I just can't get over how fast it is.

              WOW is it fast!!!

It's faster than it works on Windows!

WOW thanks for the detailed install notes. Thank you... sigh... I was dying.. ok not literally but you know...

Re: Adobe Reader and Multimedia packages

I hate to admit it as well, but it is blazingly fast. I haven't seen Adobe Reader run this fast since it was new and on a mac.

There is a similar discussion on ubuntuforums. The developer Fujitsu piped in to say that it looks like the acroread package won't be included anymore due to licensing/redistribution issues. The manual install will be the only method. That's a bummer to me because I'm a pretty huge fan of the repos.

You may want to try this repository in your sources.list. I believe it's related to the old PLF group. It has all of the above packages specifically for Feisty.

                    Code:
                    # Medibuntu (acroread, libdvdcss2, w32codecs)
                    # GPG key: wget [url]http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/medibuntu-key.gpg[/url] -O- | sudo apt-key add -
                    deb [url]http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/[/url] feisty free non-free
                    deb-src [url]http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/[/url] feisty free non-free

Re: Adobe Reader and Multimedia packages: Cannot get it to work

                      Liquidator,
I did exactly what you posted and all I get are syntax errors when I try to run acroread.

Not sure what is going wrong

hey greenonion, just use the above and install acroread and plugins using synaptic/adept.

fyi, medibuntu is referenced in the ubuntu community docs:

After activating the Medibuntu repositories I was able to install Acroread and several other packages flawlessly.
