How to get my USB wireless adapter working?

    Hello everyone,

I am new to Kubuntu, having installed it for the first time today. Everything seems to be working fine for now, except for my wireless internet.

I have a Sweex USB adapter, with a Ralink RT2571WF chipset, and I need to connect to a network with WPA protection.

I don't have a clue how to get this working. Who can help me?

I have used the Wireless Troubleshooting Guide from the link that you gave me.

The drivers I've downloaded (from the rt2x00 project) seem to be installed. iwconfig shows my adapter:

      Code:
      lo no wireless extensions.

      eth0 no wireless extensions.

      wmaster0 IEEE 802.11g Frequency:2.412 GHz
           RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2346 B

      wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"XXXXXXXXX"
           Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
           RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2346 B
           Encryption key:XXXXXXXXXX
           Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
           Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I tried to give the correct information for my network via KNetworkManager, so iwconfig shows the ESSID that I entered. However, it has no connection.

After that I tried to scan for networks using iwlist, but it told me that no networks could be found. Windows XP however finds 3 networks.

Who can help me with the next step?

Well it looks like the card is recognized. Instead of knetwork manager I would try to set it up through:

        kmenu>>system settings>>network settings>>Admin mode.

Select the device and click on configure then advanced. It looks like the only thing missing is the access point.

          Thanks for your effort eriefisher.

Since I had no success finding a network I tried the oldest trick in the world: just reinstall everything. And amazingly that worked.

          So problem solved.
