    Stuck at 28% with wireless

    Okay, So I'm absolutley new to linux, and I have Feisty Fawn 7.04.... I installed and and everythings pretty good with the exception of my screen deminsions, which i think i can fix my installing the radeon 9800 driver.

    anyways, so I figure I need internet on this, which would help me out substantially in downloaded drivers and all, and I put the WEP key in, and kablam, stuck at 28%% no matter what i do... I read a previous post stating the same 28% too...

    I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe mobo, and an AMD 64 3800+.... I'm trying to use the wireless hardware that came with the motherboard, as it worked fine in windoes....


    Can anyone help me? I saw in the other post that the guy was told to download the rt61 driver for his chipset, but i don't think this pertains to mine.... I'm really not sure, and all that....

    I do have the wirless driver that came with the motherboard for the hardware, but I dont think i can install it as its made for windoez.....

    well what do i do, is there a thing i can do?

    Do you know what wireless device you have? The fact that it is up at all suggests that there is a driver being loaded for it, I've had the 28% problem before with Broadcom chipsets I also suspected that there were some problems with knetwork manager and kwallet manager talking to each other properly, you could try removing kwallet manager and see if you have any more luck. Also try disabling the encryption on your router and see if you can connect without a password, finally you might like to try WPA as it is better encryption anyway.

      and ummm i dont know half the stuff you told me to try, remember this is my first day with linux, so you gotta like baby talk me or sumthin....

        Well just adding a bit of information now....

        I just plugged into my ethernet, so does this help any?

        Can I download the fdiswrapper orwhatever it is and install my driver?

        I can't use ethernet forever since i have to throw it across the hall to my brothers room...

        It would also be cool to fix the monitor before i started trying to fix the wireless... the max resolution is 640xsomethin which makes it almost impossible to do anything.....

        When I first installed it last night, it was perfect at the 1280x768 or whatever it is..... How come this happend? is there an easy way i can change it? or do i need to download the ati driver

          Lets look at the wireless first, if you want you should be able to find out more about the monitor by searching around for configuring x-server (X is the subsystem that all the graphics stuff runs on, you should be able to get it up to full rez ok fairly easily, getting 3d running is an extra step)

          Press Alt+F2 and in the box that pops up type konsole this will open what is called a terminal or the command line you can issue commands directly to the computer from here.

          Type lspci at the prompt you should get something like this:

            sorry i took soo long to respond, but I had to get someone to help me for a while yesterday with my monitor cuz i couldn't click accept on stuff, and it was reeeeeeeeeeeeally annoying

              It looks like it should be supported (the fact that you can at least get to 28% supports this)

              I think firstly you should try disabling encryption on your router and making sure you can get connected. If you can't connect to an open network we're gonna have to try a different tack.

              If you can connect unencrypted, fire up the program adept and search for kwallet manager if it is installed uninstall it ( i think the 28% thing is connected to knetwork manager trying to retrieve passwords from the wallet and getting caught up at that stage)

              Let us know how you get on

                Otay, i think we'll have to try something different....

                I disabled the WEP key and it still cuts out at 28%

                  So apparently there is going to be a problem running this card with network manager for the moment however all is not lost because you are using WEP rather than WPA I would suggest that you try installing kwifimanager (using adept) and seeing how you get on with that.

                    k not understanding.... i read all that at that page, and then installed kwifimanager, and i guess it installs auto after downloaded from adept....so yeah i opened it, and it showed the network in my house, but i tried surfing and using kopete, and nothing.... it did say 54 kbps though, and looked like it was connected, but also didn't show the ip adress... so im unsure of what was happening, i didnt see anything saying connect to either.....


                    any help here?

                      The launchpad link is the Ubuntu bug tracker, as far as I can tell is that what is being said is that the driver for your wireless card is currently not very well developed and lacks certain keyfeatures that knetwork manager needs to operate.

                      It seems that we are getting somewhere with kwifimanager though, I would suggest making sure you have uninstalled knetworkmanager so that they are not confusing each other (or you and I!) give the box a restart for good measure and then fire up kwifimanager and see what happens.

                      There are a couple of commands you can try to get some more info, open a terminal and type ifconfig this will spit out a bunch of info about your network configuration, whether you are connected etc

                      the other thing to post back is what you get when you try cat /etc/network/interfaces

                      We're getting there dude, fret not - Someone else may even weigh in and help us both out here!
