    Default Gateway IP is invalid

    Dear all,
I recently insalled Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn in my Dell 800 laptop. I cannot configure my wireless card (Lucent/Agere 8.10). However, the wired network is working fine.

I tried to configure using iwconfig eth1 essid <ESSID NAME> key <KEY>, and even from KNetworkManager. When I disable and enable the wireless card from KNetworkManager, I get a message saying "Default Gateway IP is invalid". I do not understand why it is giving me this error, even though I leave it as 0.0.0.0.

Following is the output of iwconfig:

    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    eth1 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"IUB-Bremen" Nickname:"HERMES I"

    Encryption key:****-****-** Security modepen
    Power Managementff
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:1

I am new to Kubuntu, and I desperately need wireless access. So, I will appreciate any help.

    Thank you.

    i assume you're on dhcp.
try and remove that gw 0.0.0.0 setting completely.
    see if that changes anything...

Re: Default Gateway IP is invalid

The problem is gone but the wireless card doesn't connect to the net...

      HOWEVER, it recognizes wireless networks...

Amagingly, it worked when I used the CD image of kubuntu during re-installation...but the weird thing is that it has stopped working ever since...

so, the wireless card is not defected, but somehow I can't connect to the web.

Any help would be very welcome.

Re: Default Gateway IP is invalid

        alright.
pls, open up a konsole, type the following commands and post the results.

        Code:
        cat /etc/network/interfaces
        Code:
        cat /etc/hosts
        Code:
        cat /etc/resolv.conf
        questions:
        a) is your wireless WEP or WPA protected?
        b) if you're on WEP, does your router support WPA-PSK?
        c) do you also use the MAC ADDRESS mapping security feature?

        cheers

          Answers:
          a) and c)
I have no idea...how to check?

          b) while connecting to a detected wireless network, there're both WPA and WEP options...for the one above it is a WEP access.

          Hope this is sufficient.

          cheers

          # oh yeah, and i tried some command to see if there's an "ipw2200" driver and I got a blank output...does that mean anything?

Re: Default Gateway IP is invalid

            allright.
i don't see anything obviously wrong in your config files.
there are a couple of things that we could change, but i don't think they would solve much.

according to what i got from googleing about your laptop, it doesn't have an intel wireless card.
            but let's double check.
pls, post the result of the following:
            Code:
            lspci
which is the list of pci buses on your system and the devices attached.
i'd like to see what it says about your wireless.

            and
            Code:
            lsmod
which is the list of all the kernel modules currently loaded.
i want to see if you have a driver loaded for the above card.

also, pls, post the result of
            Code:
            dpkg-query -l '*wpa*'
i want to see if wpasupplicant is installed in case you have WPA encrypted networks.
it should already be installed, but let's double check.

            and
            Code:
            ifconfig -a
i want to see what's the current setup of your interfaces.

and let's forget about iwconfig and stuff for now.
            let's stick to knetworkmanager.
knetworkmanager should start up automatically by logging into kde.
you should then see its icon in the system tray.
otherwise, start it up from: kmenu -> internet -> ...
if you click on that icon, the manager's setup window pops up.
you should then see (under wireless networks) what wireless networks are detected, if any.
point your mouse (just point, no clicking) on the network name and wait for the info window to pop up.
in there you'll find the info about the network and the encryption protocol (WEP, WPA, ...).

i understand you're connecting to your university's network.
so forget about the mac address mapping thing.

            alright.
            let's see...

Re: Default Gateway IP is invalid

well, i don't know too much about UNIX and that's why I'm posting on this forum ...and my card is "Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series PC card"...I'm currently connected to the wireless...which is VERY weird and I cannot figure out why my card connects to the wireless sometimes and doesn't other times (usually)...

Calculemus is helping me out with this issue..

                    thanks for the support!!!

                    cheers

Re: Default Gateway IP is invalid

                      alright, then...

                      general questions:
is it always the same wireless network you connect to?
or are there different ones...maybe WEP or WPA encrypted?
                      i don't know...can you narrow things down?

                      things i looked up:
do you dual boot your pc with windoze, by any chance?
i think i've seen this in some other thread (i'd need to go and look it up again and post the url).
in that thread i think i read that linux does something to the card that it makes it unusable in subsequent boots.
while by booting windoze first, your card can then be enabled in linux as well.
                      go figure...
                      could this your case?

somewhere else, someone posted that he needed to issue dhclient manually to be able to connect.
again, i'd need to go find that post again and link it here.
                      but, try this as well...

meanwhile...some explanations about what i asked you to do in previous posts:
i asked you to issue the lspci command 'cause i wanted to see what your network card actually was (since i was really unsure as to what is was at one point...).
now, after you posted you have a Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series PC card it is clear why there's no mention of a wireless card in the output of lspci
your card is a pcmcia card.
                      is it not?

and i asked you to issue the lsmod command because i wanted to see what drivers were loaded, if any, with respect to wireless.
this is the bit we're concerned with:

                      ...
the orinoco driver's what seems to be what's needed for your card.
so, drivers wise, it seems you're ok.

                      suggestions:
finally, the ifconfig was meant to see what your network devices actually are.
so: eth0 is your wired connection, eth1 is your wireless and lo is, of course, the loopback.
so, the following is what your /etc/network/interfaces file could simply look like:
                      Code:
                      auto lo
                      iface lo inet loopback
                      address 127.0.0.1
                      netmask 255.0.0.0

                      auto eth0
                      iface eth0 inet dhcp

                      auto eth1
                      iface eth1 inet dhcp
back up your own interfaces file and place this one in its stead.
it's not going to change much, i'm sure, but at least it's clean.

oh, and let's stick to the knetworkmanager applet for now, alright?
forget about the iw* tools and stuff.

i don't think the network card knows anything about encryption.
your router will have to support it, but it obviously does, since you said you have wpa enabled.
and, at the other end, you need the wpasupplicant package installed.
you should check that with adept, synaptic or on the command line by running:
                          Code:
                          dpkg-query -l '*wpa*'
if you haven't got the wpa supplicant installed, you will not be able to connect to wpa encrypted networks.

                            let's try lspcmcia, then.
