    Samba and permissions.

I need help setting up my samba server. I have an Ubuntu file server that is running Samba and hosting files for my small local network. I'm using samba because I'm using both Windows and Linux desktops.
This worked great for about a year, but just recently something strange happened. Whenever I copy a file from any desktop to the samba share, it gets read only permissions so I can't write to the files. All I can do is open them, but I can't edit any of them.
This is strange because, like I said, this is new. For about a year I had perfectly fine read/write permissions and there wasn't a problem. Can anyone tell me what my problem might be? I've been trying everything and just can't seem to fix this.
    Any help at all?

To start "somewhere", you could "tell" us how you have (or had) achieved this ...

I didn't say I was using Feisty as a host system. I'm not. I'm using Feisty on my desktop. I've been using Dapper on my server.

I set up shares on a server box and then shared them out with Samba. I mounted them on the server box with 777 permissions. Then when I mounted the shares from my desktop using SMB4K everything just worked perfectly. Then one day about a week ago, the permissions just weren't right. Now when I mount the share on my desktop, it says my user/group is the owner of the files but I can't change the permissions.

Then, please, post issues related to Dapper in the forums related to Dapper ...

And then? - You must have changed something in the server's system within the last couple of days (at least an update of packages related to SMB or the like ...).

To check out it's current state, however, you could post the server's feedback to the testparm command.

Yes, there was an update to Samba about a week or so ago. I'm sure that is what caused the problem, but I don't know how. None of the configuration files I'm aware of changed. smb.conf is the same. My mount permissions on the server are the same. The login accounts are the same.

My question is does anyone have any information about the recent update to Samba that might have affected how permissions are handled, either on the server or the desktop?

And FYI, I posted here because I use Feisty on my desktop and I don't know which system is causing the problem. Both systems got the same Samba update. So this forum is as good as any other. But I'll make you a deal, tell me exactly what the problem is with the relevant system, and I'll gladly make sure this thread makes its way to the right forum.
