Adept drives me mad. Every day.

    Please help if u can.

How do I get rid of Adept? I am using Kubuntu Feisty but have never rated Adept so have Synaptic for an app install GUI. Adept works reasonably well I suppose. I used it to upgrade from Edgy and all went well. The bit that drives me insane is 'Adept Notifier'. Basically, this piece of software just will not leave me alone. Even when there are no updates, it keeps hogging my system resources. I have had to utilise the 'Runaway Process Catcher' in order to give my system some room to breathe. Even when I tell 'Runaway Proc Catch' to 'STOP' Adept Notifier, it only stays stopped for a short while. After an hours uptime, my processor fan is screaming because of Adept wanting all the resources for itself. I am pretty certain that Adept Notifier is the cause of these woes because it stops after I 'sudo apt-get update' in bash or the equivalent in Synaptic.
I just want Adept gone. I can live with Synaptic and 'apt' alone. If I attempt to remove adept with Synaptic or Apt, I get a huge list of dependencies () which will also be removed and which would in turn render my OS useless.
Anyone solved such a dilemma? I have had a sniff about here, at Ubuntu forums, and with Google to no avail. Please help me out if you can.

    Big thanx in advance

PS- Aside from this relatively minor annoyance, Kubuntu outperforms XP in every department. I am a very happy customer.

    PEACE

i just right clicked on the icon in the system tray,
told the thing to stop and to never start again.
the sw is still istalled, but it isn't started anymore.

if that doesn't work for you, how about:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoremove adept-notifier
    see if that helps.

I've simply "purge-removed" Adept (incl. all parts) by means of Synaptic and replaced the notifier by this script 8)

Re: Adept drives me mad. Every day.

Thanx for replying. I tried getting rid of Adepr-Notifier in Synaptic but it is saying that in doing so I will also uninstall
            Adept
            Adept-Notifier
            Kubuntu-Desktop
            and
            language-selector-qt

Will my system be ok if I removed them too?

I tried the system tray as mentioned above yet have no 'adept-notifier' in my system tray.

So I tried 'apt-get autoremove adept-notifier' only to be told that in doing so I will also be uninstalling the following (cut from terminal. I apologise for the length)

            dkaddict@dkaddict-knotebook:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove adept-notifier

              In short: yep

              --

You may as well disable the "triggers" (instead of actually removing anything):

              Code:
              ROOT # mv /usr/share/autostart/adept_notifier_auto.desktop \
                   /usr/share/autostart/adept_notifier_auto.desktop.exitus
              ROOT # mv /usr/share/applications/kde/adept_notifier.desktop \
                   /usr/share/applications/kde/adept_notifier.desktop.exitus
This, however, you would have to "redo" subsequent to any update / upgrade.

                ...the heck is going on?
I tried getting rid of Adepr-Notifier in Synaptic but it is saying that in doing so I will also uninstall
                Adept
                Adept-Notifier

                and
                language-selector-qt

Will my system be ok if I removed them too?
this is exactly what i get by doing the "apt-get autoremove" thing from command line.
and, yeah, it looks all right.
adept and adept-notifier is what you want to remove...so, that's good.
kubuntu-desktop is a meta package (meaning there's nothing in it, only dependencies).
it gets removed whenever you remove anything that is in kubuntu-desktop's dependencies list...and it's all right.
language-selector-qt is some fancy utility that depends on adept, so it's ok too.

now, why your command line "apt-get autoremove" wants to remove all that stuff, i don't know.
it could be that some version of some package you have installed has wrong dependencies...
but then synaptic should do the same.
well, whatever, it looks awfully wrong and wants to remove to much stuff.
                so, don't do that.

the removal via synaptic removes things as expected.
                so, go ahead with that...

Ok. Thanks again for all of your replies.

Sorry I have been a while answering.

I thought apt autoremove was wanting to remove too many apps. I fancy it may have something to do with Enlightenment DR17. I installed it ages ago but it didn't work so I trashed it. I think there are loads of its dependencies lurking about on my HD.

Gonna try to sort it out.

                  Nice one

Because "autoremove" removes, automatically, all the packages listed under "The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required", as well as the package you specify.

I am way above my skill level in trying to help, but I don't know where you are in your learning curve, so I will try to help you, if possible. If Adept is installed, click on the Adept Manager in the System folder. Type in your Administrator password and when the program opens, type Adept in the find area. Then Adept features will appear. Click on Adept Notifier (the blue arrow in front of it). When the item opens scroll down and click on remove. Then close that by clicking on the arrow again. Go to the top of the page and clidk on Apply Changes. That will remove Adept Notifier from your computer. I didn't like Adept at first, however, as I have become accustomed to using it, I like it better than any other system that I have used in the past. Once you get the hang of it, it makes things fast and easy. Hope this helps.
