Dialup Permissions Issues: KnetworkManager or Firewall in the way?

    Hi

    0. Situation

Have just done a clean install of Feisty. Previously Edgy.
All worked fine under Edgy, except I never used KnetworkManager.
Same modem, same port, etc. Default init strings for modem worked fine previously under Edgy today. No changes made here.

Connecting via a Netcomm modem using KPPP.
    Modem is connected on /dev/ttyS0.
No gateway, etc. Direct connection to ISP via my telephone line.

    Its not working well...

    1. KNetworkManager does not recognise my PPP connection.

Previously (when using KNetworkManager under Mandriva) it showed up in the Available Network Interfaces when I ran KPPP the first time.
Here I am getting no idea of how to add PPP in. It does not show up at all (even when I am connected). Just my unused Eth0 connection.
KNetworkManager in the System Tray shows as "Disconnected".

There also appears to be some sort of firewall in KNetworkManager?
There are trusted/not trusted networks under Options | Show Networks.
    These have no entries yet.

    2. Mail not working

When using Kmail I am getting no access, despite all mail settings being fine.
Seems like something above is causing the problem. Feels like its being blocked out here.

Can someone pls point me in the right direction.

    Many thanks

    Andy

Re: Dialup Permissions Issues: KnetworkManager or Firewall in the way?

    Hi All.

    Have narrowed down my problem.

My Mail was not working because of a permissions error.

It seems that I can only get access to the internet (POP, SMTP, HTTP, etc) if I am using root privileges (eg. SUDO firefox).
If I give my normal user account root privileges it still does not work....

SO.... Something is getting in the way of ordinary internet access unless I am using the root account (or equivalent).
I suspect its related to the above problem (KnetworkManager &/or firewall).
Am really stuck here. Can someone pls point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

    Andy
