    Weird Ethernet behaviour: no Internet!

    OK, here's the deal:
I've been using Kubuntu BB (5.10) for quite some time now, and very happily. However, things ARE SUPPOSED to evolve, and it makes perfect sense to move on (partially, since I only intend to change VERSION and not DISTRO).
And so I got Kubuntu 7.04 (FF), and was very happy to see that my HORRIBLE/HATEFUL on-board graphics chipset is Accelerated by default!!! (THANK YOU!)
But... here's the issue: I have no internet.
And it's weird, since internet works out of the box with Breezy (tried it on LiveCD, no problem), and I can't get it to work on FF (also tried Dapper and DIDN'T WORK either).

What changed since Dapper? I think something DID change because I see a notorious difference: I have two ethernet cards, one DOESN'T WORK (roasted during an electrical storm), and Breezy seems to KNOW it doesn't work, because I can't activate its interface (it goes up and down right away); HOWEVER, with either Dapper or Feisty, the interface is activated by default. If I try to deactivate and activate it again... it works. And that's weird... isn't it? I mean, that card is toast...

So, that's the problem. I am willing to try as many things as possible, because I REALLY WANT this distro, it's awesome... but without internet it's out of question.

My working card uses a Realtek RTL-8139 chipset, which is CORRECTLY detected by either distro (BB, DD or FF).

If there's anyone willing to help me, I will post any information that could be needed. So, feel free to ask anything.
    Thank you in advance.

if the other card is toast why not remove it from the system. If it is built into the mb disable it in the bios...

      Re: Weird Ethernet behaviour

Yeah... it's OnBoard... I thought it was, I checked... it is.
But... I CAN'T FIND IT ON BIOS!!! I don't know how is it "labeled" there... and I couldn't guess from the things I read.

Maybe that's because I was expecting something VERY obvious like VIA VT6102 (Rhine-II) under Integrated Peripherals??... Well, I'm not that lucky. Nothing as such.

How is my OnBoard Ethernet Card supposed to be labeled on BIOS (Ami)?

And thanks a lot (again) for the tip.

Re: Weird Ethernet behaviour: no Internet!

I checked on the PC man (under BIOS configuration), and seems like no on-board ethernet deactivation through BIOS is possile...

However, I REALLY don't think that would make a big difference... after all, on Breezy INTERNET does work anyways (under same conditions.)
So, the thing would be to make internet work on my second card (Realtek RTL-8139) ignoring that useless card (Rhine-II), which is exactly what Breezy does by default.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to do anything about it, at all?

          Thanks again...

Can you post the output of ifconfig?

Re: Weird Ethernet behaviour: no Internet!

You are lucky that your ethernet card is being detected. I have a Realtek 81389 as well, and NO distro of Linux can detect it. Fortunately, I had an old DAVICOM card lying around, so I've installed that now. I don't have internet on that computer yest, but I'm hoping I'll be able to connect to the internet once my connection is available.
I'll be following this post to see if there's a handy resolution!
