Strange problem using Konqueror as a web browser!

I have done a fresh install of Feisty Fawn. I had Dapper Drake earlier. All went well. I have a Conexant modem on my laptop. Got the linuxant drivers, installed them and the modem works just fine.
I use a slow dial up connection to the net. Configured kppp. Still fine.
Connected to the net. Could download software from the repositories using apt-get. Could run ping for various websites. The ttl was a bit long, about 7000 ms. No different from how it was in Dapper.
Configured the network settings from System settings. Chose "Connect directly to the internet" since I do not go through a proxy. Did the same in Konqueror proxy settings.
Lauched Konqueror. Works fine. Typed www.google.com in the address bar and clicked Go. Instantly I get the the message "error loading webpage. could not open site http://www.google.com"
Tried everything I could think of. Changed all the settings. Nothing works. Seems as if Konqueror is just not aware of being connected to the internet!!
Same things used to work just fine in Dapper. Maybe I have got some small setting wrong.
Would appreciate any help / suggestions.

Re: Strange problem using Konqueror as a web browser!

This worked for me, but the internet connection is via a router and network, rather than modem direct to the PC.

I went to K button/System Settings/Network Settings/ Domain Name System tab, and added my ISPs DNS settings in there.
My DNS settings are in the router, and not in the XP boxes, and they work fine, but th Feisty box does not seem to be accessing them in the router and needed them on the PC itself.

If you do know what yours should be, check with your ISP, probably a FAQ on their website with the info on
    .
I am a total newbie at linux, and have only been asking questions on this forum so far. So If I have been able to help let me know, It would be good to know I have put something back after all this taking I have been doing so far.

Re: Strange problem using Konqueror as a web browser!

I am having a similar problem. I am using kppp to dial with a Verizon EVDO CDMA card. If I try to use konqueror I automatically get an error loading page - cannot find page. If I use firefox, the web works fine. host, apt, etc all work fine. It is only konqueror. I did find someone on the web saying when they used sudo konqueror - it worked. I gave this a try and sure enough sudo konqueror worked for getting to websites so it seems to be some permissions problems when using kppp and konqueror in feisty fawn.

When I am connected through a lan (either wired or wireless) konqueror works fine. It seems to be something with kppp/dialup, konqueror and permissions.

      Any thoughts?

It looks like I got simular problems. Konqueror stop working with net after switching from eth1 to eth0. Firefox and everything else (ping, apt-get etc) work just fine. It's clearly a bug in my opinion. So I gonna to post bug report.

I found this thread via a search. I'm not sure If it is the same problem or not but here it goes.

Fresh install of feisty, connected to network wirelessly. First step update via adept, no problem.
Second step, install synaptic(my preference)no problem.
Third step, go online to kubuntuforums.---no go---
Try google to make sure it's not a server problem---no go---
          ping -c 3 kubuntuforums.net
three packets sent  two packets received 33% packet loss
          ping -c 3 google.com
              same response
Download Firefox and now I'm online

What's going on here, is this an actuall bug or just a setting somewhere?
I have ot encountered this problem in previous version.

          Let me know, erie

Edit: It's working now. Don't ask me how.

          ~$sudo make me a sandwich

            Dear Neil P,
My apologies for the late reply. Hadn't managed to try the fix. Today I tried it by entering the DNS data, but it didn't work. At the same time, nothing else worked (Kopete, pinging). So maybe it was a bad day for the net connection. Thanks for the tip. Will try again.

The last post by CaptainUseless, and the link on it are useful and interesting. This is quite a common problem.
