Samba -- WinXP loves Feisty, affection not reciprocated

All these Samba posts, and none with my problem ...

I was so sure Samba was set up correctly a week ago, based on "seeing" things from both directions, that it was only this morning that I actually copied a file from the WinXp shared "My Documents" folder to my Feisty /home folder. SHOCK -- it wouldn't copy it! Here is what it says (in Konqueror):

    "Could not read smb://dibl-winxp/My Documents/Next Folder/filename"

And this after actually warning me that it saw a file of the same name and date in the target folder in /home, and making me choose "overwrite".

Hmmmmmmmmmmm! Yes, I turned the Windows firewall off, made sure I had a samba password set up, reviewed Fintan's little discovery about msdfs proxy (which doesn't appear in my smb.conf file anyway).

Funny thing -- from Win XP, I can copy and paste the file over into my /home directory in the Feisty system, and vice versa back into Win XP. It's only from the Feisty side that I can't get the file to copy across.

    I'm bafoozled -- any ideas?

Ad hoc: are both systems using the same netmask (e.g. 255.255.255.0) as well as broadcast address?

Before I saw the reply, I was doing some experiments, and came up with this strange result:

The file that I was stubbornly trying to copy using Konqueror happened to be a backup ".sqz" file, for which an existing copy was already in the correct folder in /home. On the chance that the "overwrite" requirement was somehow relevant, I made a little "test.txt" file and put it in the same place, and the bloody thing copied! But the .sqz file won't.

However, I like your suggestion, U.R. The "Bill-in-a-Box" WinXP did not show an IP address on its virtual network adapter when I opened it, so I gave it a unique IP address and the same subnet mask as the host Feisty system.

Results ..... A new and different error message!

It actually appeared to be executing the copy command -- it put up the progress bar, started with 1%, and then put up this:

"The file or folder smb://dibl-winxp/My Documents/blah blah blah.sqz does not exist."

Hmmmmmm .... perhaps this a type of progress ..... :

But wait -- did you say the same broadcast address for both the host and the virtual WinXP network interface? Won't that be a conflict? OK, I'll try it.

Just to ensure that not the file is the source of your trouble, you may "wrap it up" in a zip file and try to copy this "archive within an archive" ...

As for the broadcast address (which may or may not be of relevance ...), this defintion should give you an idea of what this is about.

          mehhh!

Doesn't care if it is zipped it or not, broadcast IP on my Feisty system was set wrong, and is now right, but that apparently is irrelevant. Fiddled with the WinXP network connection setting -- it is still very happy browsing and copying and pasting all over my /home directory in Linux, and Konqueror is happy to browse all over the XP /My Docs filesystem, but it's not willing to actually finish the copy process when I try it.

In the process of fiddling things, the error has gone back to the original "cannot read file" --

I think I will do my backup copying from the WinXP side, and pretend to be happy about it. :P

In this case, I'd suspect the file sharing configuration on the Windoze side of the "digital divide" to be erroneous (as you're seemingly trying to share from both sides - which I do not and know close to nothing about, I'm afraid ...).

Thank you, U.R. -- I would suspect you are more right than wrong about that!
