Endless wireless woes with Kubuntu 7.04 (kernel 2.6.20-15)

I am experiencing ongoing wireless problems with Kubuntu 7.03 and 7.04, final release.

Upon installation of the OS or re-installation, or re-installation of restricted header modules or any of the other myriad of solution suggested to solve the problem, the wireless connection will work upon booting up. However, after a few reboots, wireless refuses to work.

I have tested and applied basically all methods of fixing this problem that were mentioned in the forum. From re-installing OS, tweaking files (resolve.conf, interfeaces, etc) to using Networkmanager and then deleting it completely thus letting the OS do its thing to starting wireless from a command line. Many succeed and work for a short while, other don't do anything at all.

I also filed a bug report.
The suggested solution/work around worked for a short while and then . . . see above.

My old Kubuntu 6.06, which uses the same hardware and wireless card, works like a charm. It does not give me any trouble.

Since 6.06 works flawlessly with my hardware, 7.04 should have no problem. But it does.

Is there another bug in the wireless network stuff of 7.04 or does anyone have a new idea on how to fix this?
I have pretty much run out of fresh solutions.

I have the same problem.

Intel pro 3945 abg wireless card. Kubuntu has the card listed in the drivers and hardware section, Knetwork manager sees it also but there is no way to use the wireless.

Using Airlink wireless adapter card. Atheros chipset. Very common and supported.
My card is always reognized by the OS, driver installed and working.

It is something in the setup of the wireless network connection. I found a website at one time that had detailed information on how to make wireless networking operational and funtioning reliably at all times. Thought I bookmarked it, but I didn't. Hunting for it. If I find it, I will let you know.

I have removed knetworkmanager. I left Wireless Assistant but am not using it. I had KWifimanager installed to monitor activity but removed it as well.

I am attemting to go back to the original OS install of wireless. It used to work right out of the box without any of the fancy stuff. Whenever I logged in, it was there.

Setting only Network Settings in System settings. Routes: 192.168.0.1 and nameserver 192.168.0.1.
The system then usually modifies these settings to produce a usable connection. Resolv.conf is edited by system. I used to tweak it but now leave it alon because it overrides the system settings. I have reduces /etc/network/interfaces to a bare:

"auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0



iface ath0 inet dhcp

iface wifi0 inet dhcp"

since I do not have a wired connection.

I then went to a command line and started a connection with "sudo dhclient wifi0".
It should also have worked with sudo dhclient ath0 but for some reason that command did not do anything for me recently.

Anyway, I got an active connection, which I am using right now. don't know whether it will be there on my next boot up.
Usually, the problem starts after booting the computer again because somehow all the system settings revert back to some default.

That's all I can say right now unless someone picks it up from here and enlightens us a little more.

I have the same problem my wireless worked with Dapper, now it will not work. It sees the routers, but the stars are greyed outso I cannot connect to the routers, this definetly is a bug in the kernal, it appears no one has the solution to this probelm will wait a week or so to find out if they fix it if not, I will go back to Dapper. I do like 7.04 but there are lots of complaints about the wireless (but in kernal) Hopefully some one will fix it.

I have been connected on wireless now for almost one entire week. I rebooted and used the standard apps to connect to wireless - no success.

Then I opened a command console and started a wireless connection with "sudo dhclient ath0" and got a connection right away.

You may have to use 'sudo dhclient' or 'sudo dhclient XXX' depending on what interface is active.
In my case it is ath0.

Still not able to connect via Wireless Lan Manager or Knetworkmanager. However, manual connection from command line with "sudo dhclient ath0" works every time.

Linux has a problem with wireless connections that can make for strange happenings.
After installing the latest version of Feisty my wireless connection worked just fine - for a few boots. The it simply quit.

I can log onto my wireless access point via Knetworkmanager. The connection is established but does not result in an IP address. Result: No connections to the Net at all.

Open command console and enter " sudo dhclient ath0" and a connection is made to my standard wireless access point. This connection is then reflected in the knetworkmanager display.

Go figure!!!!

But at least it works.

One would hope that Linux/Kubuntu would finally be able to resolve the problems with wireless network connectivity.
Well . . .

Installed Gutsy Gibbon. Wireless worked for a few login cycles, then quit.
No luck thereafter . . .

I seem to suffer the same problem. Just upgraded from 6.10 to 7.04 and now I'm not able to make my wireless connection work. Same hardware!

When I installed 6.10 the wireless card was automatically detected, driver installed and worked perfectly - and Kubuntu 6.10 is actually the only linux distro that has happened.

Now running lshw I get:
*-network:0 UNCLAIMED
description: Ethernet controller
product: DWL-510 2.4Ghz Wireless PCI Adapter
etc....
but no logical name, no driver configured

So, nothing else really works as there is no iface name. And of course I didn't run lshw when having 6.10 installed, so I have no idea how it worked/was configured then.

I hope that some of you may have some ideas on how to fix this problem - perhasp with information about which driver/module to use/configure - or perhasp I should downgrade to 6.10 but is that possible ?

For reliable wireless network connection I am still using Kubuntu 6.06. And I will hang on to that version until one of the newer ones comes with an equally reliable wireless network connection.

For now, Kubuntu 7.04 is giving me a wireless connection again - but only if I start it on the command line with "sudo dhclient ath0".
KWifiManger shows an existing connection upon login but does not actually have a working link. To get that I need to do the command line thing.
Strange.
But right now it does the trick . . .

I noticed the same issue when trying the KNetworkManager - I could setup my keys and such in KNM but had to do a dhclient ath0 from the command line. It appears that KNM has issues getting the ip once the config is completed.

As for why some people lose it after a couple days(or weeks), it may be because your IP is getting refreshed by the DHCP server but KNM isn't getting the new IP. My home router (WRT54G w/Open WRT) is pretty sticky with IP's so I haven't lost connection yet or had to manually refresh my IP from command line since I installed several weeks ago.

To be clear, knetworkmanager is nothing but a gui front end, so it does nothing. I have not found it to useful. I think you will have better luck using CLI and ifconfig and iwconfig as appropriate. Two different machine (completely different) and both we reasonably easy to setup with dapper, edgy and feisty. I think these problems are configuration issues.

I am using KWifiManger as a visual indication of network activity and command line
"sudo dhclient" to get the wireless connection started.
Works just fine - except once every while the system settings revert back to some faulty settings on reboot.

Reset manually and everything works again.

Command Line Interface ->System->Konsole. If you are happy with the way it is working, fine, but you shouldn't need to do all that.

I am NOT happy.
But it is the only way I can make it work - at least for a while.
For example, it just worked for a week or so. Now it is down again. No apparent reason - just a few updates.
