    Intermittant internet connection via router

Other Windows machines on the network connect to the internet fine, no problems at all.
But using Konqueror on Feisty I get this problem.

I can often do a Google search from the built in google search bar and the search works with results coming up, but when you click on a result, a new tab pops up as expected, but unable to connect error comes up. It often takes two or three minutes to connect to the site.
If I do the same search on google on a windows machine at the same time, I can connect to the results immediately.

Neither the router nor the windows machines have DNS servers specified. I am assuming it is some sort of DNS/proxy problem.

Have looked on the Konqueror config page , and all setting look similar to that as set on the windows machines

Re: Intermittant internet connection via router

I posted a similar problem to the forums a couple of weeks ago. We've been doing some investigation and haven't really been able to figure very much out.

We've successfully be running Breezy, Dapper, and Edgy on a number of machines without any probelms. However, most of the machines we've tried with Feisty (both Ubuntu and Kubuntu) are having the same kind of problems that you describe. We looked a bit into the DNS and tried setting some external DNS servers and it didn't seem to help.

We also had a bit of a look at the machine configurations and we're having the problems with different network controllers (sky2 driver and forcedeth). Right now, we think it's something to do with the network itself but we're not sure what since it seems to work for all of our other machines correctly.

We've run wireshark and the sites that are failing are coming up with an error that the packet checksum is bad and suggesting that this may be due to checksum offloading. Have you tried looking at the packets as well?

I'll post again with any progress that we make.

    Cheers

      Hey, thanks for the reply.

I think I had seen your, or other peoples postings on this. But no I have not looked at packets. That does not really mean anything to me. Have been using windows for years, and only just started ( a few weeks now) been using linux (kubuntu)

I have not had the problem for a while now. I had put my ISP's DNS server addresses in
System Settings/Network Settings/Network Connections/ Domain Name system tab and it all seems to work now.

I had read somewhere that someone had sucess with other browsers, such as FireFox, where Konqueror would not work

Re: Intermittant internet connection via router

I'm glad to hear that things have settled down on your machine.

I'm going to post something additional here because your problem sounds very similar to the ones I am having and I think that I might have found a fix. I tried it using the live CD and my connection went from broken with weird problems to working immediately.

        Based on this post:
        http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ghlight=feisty
I executed the following command as root:
        Code:
        echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
The post on the Ubuntu forum references another page. I didn't totally understand everything but it sounds like they've changed how some of the tcp packets are handled and buggy routers might be destroying them in Feisty but earlier distros are okay.

I need to do some more testing tomorrow but the initial results suggest that this fixes the problem I'm having.

        Hope that helps.
