WEP connection in Feisty?

Hi,

Just installed Feisty on my desktop, and I've been fighting with it for a while now trying to get my wireless connection working.

Now, don't reckon it's a driver prob as knetworkmanager can detect a number of networks in the area. I click the one I want to connect to, enter my WEP key and then it fails at 28%. Googled the problem and there don't appear to be any solutions out and about.

I've discovered though that if I set off knetworkmanager and it gets stuck at 28%, I can open a terminal and use sudo dhclient ra0 - it'll pick up a correct IP and I can ping the network - managed to get to google too. Once knetworkmanager gives up though, it'll drop the connection.

Tried using just iwconfig, which'll only work for seconds at a time, if at all.

Any ideas? I'm also a newcomer to Linux, so be gentle

I have found a problem with kubuntu remembering WEP settings.
With "system settings" ensure that the interface is enabled on startup and enter the IP address detrails. Do not enter your WEP code.

Assuming you have access to a wired LAN also, get the package wlassistant via adept. This will give you a service (under the internet heading) of wireless assistant. Send a shortcut to the desktop. Launch that and you will be asked for your password. Select the desired connection and you'll then get a first time wizard in which you will be asked for your WEP details. Connection should then be successful.

The bad part is that you will need to run it whenever you connect following boot up. This is because Kubuntu hasn't remembered the WEP settings. The Wireless Assistant has, however, so the procedure will be launch/password/select connection.

Cheers for that, Wireless Assistant works great! I think I remember using it in an earlier version of Kubuntu when I was trying it out a while back. Why'd they not keep it in Feisty I wonder...?

Glad it worked!

One more thing. If you have kwifimanager loading in the system tray on startup, you will have visual confirmation on the connection and, if you want, signal strength as well
