Re: wireless netowrk can't connect after update [feisty herd 5]
Try system settings/network and configure your wireless interface in administrator mode. For some reason some updates clear the info in there. Specifically any encryption code and default gateway. Enter those details and the problem should go away.

I'm having the exact same problem.
I can connect manually -
all of my network settings are there. lspci shows the card, I can see the networks but it does not remember my wep settings or even if they are not there and is open, I cannot manually connect...
any pointers?

Still happens, I'm afraid.
I'm still using the wireless assistant (file name wlassistant) to connect manuallt each time.
I'm wondering what file the config is kept in - any possibility of bypassing the GUI and resetting this by editing the config file?

Re: wireless netowrk can't connect after update [feisty herd 5]
No, it's not hidden. It happened to my ethernet connectionas well, by the way.
Basically since upgrading to Feisty (herd 5) Wireless has been tricky. Using system settings I would configure the network including the Wireless WEP settings. Upon clicking apply I then had a connection. However, on reboot, those settings were lost and it was necessary to do it all over again so thank god for the wireless assistant.
Using Knetworkmanager to connect woyuld invariably fail. History tells me that the connection should only be configured once. Removing knetworkmanager and configuring within system setttings gives me the perfect scenario - I get connection at boot. I can use wireless assistant to connect if I am at another location (say a wi-fi hotspot) and that works every time. For good measure I have kwifmanager running at startup for a visible sign of connection and also an indication of signal strength. Anyone having problems starting wireless on boot should try this.

You're going to want to delete whatever your wireless connection is from /etc/network/interfaces (eth0, ath1, whatever) and let Knetworkmanager mange it itself. Leave the lo if it is there, and your wired connection.

Re: wireless netowrk can't connect after update [feisty herd 5]
I have also encountered problems. My safecom lan card worked well on my laptop(using ndiswrapper) with 6.10 installed but is not even recognised by my system under feisty. I also have an orinoco card which is even worse. fiesty will not boot while it is inserted and freezes my system if I boot and then insert the card.I have managed to get a safecom usb to work. Does anyone have any suggestions as I much prefer to use a card.

thanks!
1) get the alternate CD which corresponds to whatever you installed (if u installed 7.04 i386 Desktop, get the 7.04 i386 Alternate CD
2) start up your install
3) put the alternate CD in the drive when your OS finishes loading...cancel any auto actions
4) goto KMenu->System->Adept
5) when you have adept loaded, goto File->Manage Repositories
6) when you get to the Manage Repositories window, click the Third Party Software tab
7) when this tab displays, click the "Add CD-ROM" button
8) click OK when it asks you to load the CD
9) when it finishes loading the repositories, click Close and then choose to let it reload
After it refreshes, you have about 21337 repositories available...one of them is wlassistant.
You can install it there...or go to KMenu->Add/Remove Programs and let it install the app for you and put it in your menus...
good luck
cheers
