    Graphic install crashes

I have been running various Kubuntus since Breezy. I thought I would try the Feisty disc since I like the excitement of downloading the very latest as it takes shape helping out with a little (inexpert) testing.

Anyway, first attempt - after setting the keyboard in the graphical installer it crashes consistently. I have checked the integrity of my installation disc - fine. I have also tried the 'safe graphics' option in the boot and install menu. The screen just goes to wrong with columns down it in graphics mode and the system hangs.

I have an ASUS motherboard with Nvidia Geforce 2 ti200 graphics card.

I have run the hardware database utility in Edgy - the database reference is
    5b74cde069d720a6a1ec24f5b9abd66b

Any suggestions? Is this a known problem? Do I have any alternative bu to wait for the next Feisty snapshot disc?

      Re: Graphic install crashes

Thanks for the reply. In fact, I have already tried this and it fails because it identifies my IDE hdb as a SCSI disc. If I try to install on it anyway (hda is a Windows NTFS system) it says no root location is specified and won't go any further. Presumably, if I had got past the graphics crash on the live install I would have been got by that one. I will have to wait. It is frustrating as I have had neither problem with early release discs (or production discs) of Breezy and Edgy.

i am really not sure about this but doesn't linux always handle ide-discs as scsi?
run the life-cd, start console and do the following:
        sudo parted
        type "print" into the commandline
        and then type "quit".

copy the output of the print command to this thread.

        till then and keep going

Installation crash before partitioning is a bug. It's already being corrected: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source...ity/+bug/76976

There is a workaround for this:

run sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get install ubiquity-frontend-kde to get fixed version, then start install again

There are some other known issues described here:

Well...It worked for me and for some other people...maybe at the moment you tried something was broken again in the ubiquity...or maybe you did something wrong...

                    sudo apt-get update

                    then this:
                    sudo apt-get install ubiquity-frontend-kde

It installed fine but when i went to "install" again I had the same problem

Then I have no idea why it didn't work....

I did exactly the same and it worked... i started livecd, from konsole:
sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get install ubiquity-frontend-kde and launched the installation from desktop.

Are you using herd 2 ?

                          I can just confirm that

                          (..)
I did exactly the same and it worked... i started livecd, from konsole:
sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get install ubiquity-frontend-kde and launched the installation from desktop.
                          (..)

                          worked for me as well.

Just for the sake of completeness, I would like to mention that one should not reboot the system (live cd) between

                          the commands <sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install ubiquity-frontend-kde > and

relaunching the installation (icon) from desktop.

One may have a look into xorg.conf, the entries should be as standard/simple as possible

                          Section "Device"
                          ...
                          Driver "ati"
                          ...
                          Section "Screen"
                          ...
                          DefaultDepth 24
                          ...

                            Re: Graphic install crashes

if the installer crashes before getting to the partitioner (garbled screen, etc) simply switch to a virtual terminal and then back to your desktop like this:

simply hit ctrl-alt-f1 (you will see a fullscreen console) then hit ctrl-alt-f7 to get back

This may be easier than trying to upgrade ubiquity, especially if you have no networking at the time

I can confirm this, my installation screen went haywire after selecting the keyboard (I think). CTRL + ALT + F2 and CTRL + ALT + F7 did the job! But you DO need to update the ubiguity if you get the partitioner crashing like I did. These two things with the Feisty Herd #2 and finally my Core 2 Duo has a Linux!!! So long have I waited!
