X is totally screwed up - how to manually configure

I just installed gutsy, replace feisty.
Installation went without a hitch, but after rebooting
the computer, X is totally screwed up and unreadable.
I know how to boot into recovery mode. I presume,
indeed I hope that there is a manual X configuration.

Any help at all would be appreciated, this is very distressing.
    Thanks
    Tim
P.S. I come from the redhat slackware background am
    comfortable with the command line.

After booting to recovery mode, type the command:
    Code:
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This will allow you to manually reconfigure xorg.conf; just choose the default answers for anything you don't know. You may want to choose "vesa" (or "nv" if you have an Nvidia card), rather than the correct driver for your video card, in case the correct driver is corrupted.
