Can't see "Recommended Updates" button and other screens in Adept Manager

I wasn't sure whether to put this in here or in the Gutsy forum, but since this is related first of all to a Feisty install, I'll start with here.

I have seen all over the Internet as well as in Gutsy documentation that the recommended way to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy is to go to Adept Manager (as root, of course :-), then go to Manage Repositories and then make sure that "Recommended Updates" is turned on.

What I get when I go to the "Manage Repositories" screen is a GUI view of the text of my /etc/apt/sources.list with no buttons or any other cute screen with checkmarks like I have seen. Could this be because I edited my sources.list by hand? I have tried to restore a vanilla sort of sources.list, but with no joy.

How do I get Adept Manager to show the screen that everybody else is seeing? I don't know if I should use the "System Update Tool" under K->System since that seems to me to be simple Ubuntu? I see downloading the DVD as my only other alternative to upgrade; but this might mean something is fundamentally broken on my system?

    Any help appreciated.

Re: Can't see "Recommended Updates" button and other screens in Adept Manager

As was observed by another poster with the same issue, you seem to be running an *older* version of Adept Manager (Edgy maybe?). That aside, in order to be able to follow the posted upgrade instructions, you need to running the latest version of Adept Manager.

Okay. First, reboot your system to ensure that no occurrence of Adept Manger is running. If the Adept Notifier shows up, right-click it and select Quit.

    Open a konsole and type:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoremove
    then:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoclean
    then:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    then:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install
What we are doing is cleaning up the Adept package archives on your system, and forcing apt-get to look for updated packages. If you are in fact running an older version of Adept Manager, it should be updated. If on the off chance this does not update Adept Manager to the current version, this process does no harm.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

2.1 Cruiser (KDE 3.5.6) is correct for Feisty. Hmm. You don't have the following when you click on Adept | Manage Repositories?

Use KSnapshot. K Menu | Graphics | KSnapshot

Choose 'window under cursor' to limit the image to just the item you place your mouse cursor over. The program is very simple to use. The default save to location is your home folder. Once the images are saved, you post to your message by clicking on the Additional Options... in the Post Reply. You will see the line for adding files (you click on the folder to the right of the file name field) that you select by browsing to the location on you PC.

Yup, that isn't what you should be seeing. That looks a lot like what I had in Adept Manage Repositories when running Edgy. Was your system upgraded from an earlier release??

Well, I guess it's time to start looking at the 'depends' packages that adept-manager needs. Here is the list from my working system:

                  Depends
                  adept-common, kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.5-1), libacl1 (>= 2.2.11-1), libapt-pkg-libc6.4-6-3.53, libart-2.0-2 (>= 2.3.16), libattr1 (>= 2.4.4-1), libaudio2, libc6 (>= 2.5-0ubuntu1), libfontconfig1 (>= 2.4.0), libfreetype6 (>= 2.2), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.2), libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0), libidn11 (>= 0.5.18), libjpeg62, libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.13-4), libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.8really3.3.7), libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.2), libtdb1, libx11-6, libxcursor1 (>> 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2 (>> 2.1.1), libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2 (>= 2:1.2.0), libxrender1, libxt6, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1)
It'll be slow, but open Adept Manager and check each package above. Verify that they are installed, and that the version is the same as shown above. If you have any that are different, note them.

Yes, this was an upgrade from Edgy, via the DVD. It had a few hiccups but it seemed to go well, until just now.

The only two weirdnesses are that libapt-pkg-libc6 seems to be "apt" and that libxcursor1 version is 1.1.8 (what does "> >" mean as a version comparison?)

apt is already the newest version.

Ah, I see that libxcursor1 is ok since it is 1.1.8 and the required is 1.1.2.

What can be the problem here?

I have the same issue as the OP, I followed the advice on this thread (adept manager seems up to date and software-properties-kde is installed and updated to the latest version).

I'll just check the dependencies one by one I guess...

Edit: in my case this is NOT an update from Edgy - I installed Feisty from the CD.
I have a small bit of proprietary or non-standard software (clamav, skype and a locally-compiled mssql apache module), but I uninstalled those and it didn't help. I use apt-get and aptitude interchangeably and I have the Synapitic package manager installed (was required for some install a while ago but I don't remember the details).
