    Questions/issues after "upgrading" from Ubuntu

I'm new to Ubuntu/Kubuntu. Have been running Ubuntu for about a month. Just installed the KDE package. My motivations are two: [1] it's my understanding that Kubuntu is a bit more flexible about configuration, [2] petty as it sounds, I hate the Ubuntu colors.

Some things that didn't change that I expected to change:

[1] during boot, everything looks Kubuntu-specific except for one rectangular screen that's a tan/orange holdover from Ubuntu; I believe it's the last screen before the desktop displays.

[2] When OpenOffice loads, the initial screen with the logo and version number displays with the Ubuntu theme.

[3] Windows do not remember their last position. The fact that GNOME won't let you do that was one of my reasons for switching to KDE. I thought I would be able to set this to my preference with KDE.

I'd appreciate any advice as to how I can change the first two, i.e., to get rid of the glaring Ubuntu theme holdovers. And please tell me there's a way I can get my applications to remember their last positions.

    Thanks,

Check that you are using kdm:

    default display manager:
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
    or
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
    And choose display manager kdm.

    Install:
kdmtheme - theme manager for KDM
kdmtheme is a theme manager for KDM. It provides a KDE Control Module (KCM)
that allows you to easily install, remove and change your KDM themes.

    Homepage: http://beta.smileaf.org/projects
and check that you are not using Ubuntu themes.

[2] When OpenOffice loads, the initial screen with the logo and version number displays with the Ubuntu theme.
Goto /usr/lib/openoffice/program/ and rename (remove) openintro_ubuntu.bmp then open office will use intro.bmp (default open office splash). Offcource you could use your own picture.

    One way:
Right click window border > Advanced > Special Application settings:

Window pops up -> Enable Position, choose Remember. Click Ok.

    Note
Some programs have own position system.

    Example:
Taming the GIMP with KDE window-specific settings

Might have been a tad more complete had you installed the "kubuntu-desktop" meta-package. I guess it's not necessarily too late -- I'm not sure how much more of Kubuntu that's beyond KDE you might be interested in. That's probably why bits of Ubuntu are still showing up when you open programs, etc.

Actually, I think I was premature. What reported on in my original post was my first reboot after installation. I've since rebooted again, and the remnants of Ubuntu did not appear.

I believe I did install the meta-package, and that kdm is running. But I will check on that on on kdmtheme.

Goto /usr/lib/openoffice/program/ and rename (remove) openintro_ubuntu.bmp then open office will use intro.bmp. Offcourse, you could use your own picture.
And thanks for this. [I think I prefer the OpenOffice logo to my picture. And just to make certain, my avatar is an avatar, not a picture of me. Actually, the avatar is a picture of Walt Whitman. I like Walt Whitman and his picture.]

Thanks for your help -- Oh, do you have any feedback on my question about whether it's possible to get applications to remember the position of their last open window under kde?

        Again, thanks,

Perhaps you've seen my reply to Rog131. I'm pretty certain I installed the meta-package. I'm not sure how much of Kubuntu I'll want to use my self, but I like the look of things better so far.

I had installed Samba when I was just Ubuntu, but found it a complete mystery. Checking things out after Kubuntu was installed I found a GUI for Samba, which certainly looks complicated enough, but at least I can see what I'm working with.

Do you have an answer to my question about getting applications to remember the position of their last open window?

            Thanks,

I need permission to remove/rename this file. How do I get it?

                Remember, I'm new at this.

Thanks for the references. I'm printing them out and will use them. Also for the specific directions.

One of the reasons I switched to Kubuntu was because I want to be able to tweak the system to my likings. That means I have to learn the system.

                    Thanks again,

I deleted openintro_ubuntu.bmp, and it seems there's no default OpenOffice splash. There's just a quivering black rectangle until OpenOffice opens.

Should I have renamed instead of deleting?

                      Thanks,

Re: Questions/issues after "upgrading" from Ubuntu

Do you have in the /usr/lib/openoffice/program/ folder intro.bmp (original OO splash) ?

Trying (renaiming intro.bmp) - yes, if you don't have intro.bmp then you get black box.

You need picture file (windows bitmap )-> intro.bmp, rgb color, grayscale dosen't work.

I do, but it's the Ubuntu version. Looks exactly like openintro_ubuntu.bmp

Hmm - i'm using gutsy, maybe that's the difference.

                            I think so, or:

                            OpenOffice Splash

                            Description:
I got bored of the standard OpenOffice.org splash screen so I decided to make my own. The package includes splashes in the following colors:

Aqua, Black, Blue, Green, Gray, Navy, Orange, Pink, Red

                            Enjoy!! :-)
