I tried to update from the Alternate cd, but noticed that it was downloading from the 'net so switched the router off (only a 1Gb download limit
), - it had got to about package 380 (3%) - and killed the update then got an "if you stop now, broken, end of the world... etc., message.
I rebooted, and find that the updater refuses to update from the cd unless it has internet access for some reason.
I did the: "dpkg--configure -a", and fired up Adept, got a "Could not open socket" message, clicked "OK", ->Fetch Updates.... to be told that there are 990 ready to be upgraded.
I still can't do it from the cd, would it be safer to go for a re-install (i don't really want to lose my present settings and installed stuff, etc.), or would it be better to wait 'til later tonight to upgrade the packages (i can download what i want after 12:00pm free of charge), or is there another way to do it?
Any guidance will be gratefully received.
