Pefect! Also, if you pull the window running the gears away from the Konsole window, you will be able to see the reported frames-per-second rate that glx is outputting. What is the typical number there?

Re: Help with boot / install please

Over 15 seconds I had this:

        35647 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7129.310 FPS
        34119 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6823.756 FPS
        71209 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14241.695 FPS

        Any good?

I just need my monitor to be sorted and for everything to fit in position right. As mentioned the sides of my screen are arched in.

Thanks for your help. I'm sure we can sort it, but my patience is wearing thin I have to be honest.

Re: Help with boot / install please

Those are great numbers -- Google Earth, Compiz, or whatever you want will run fine.

I'd adjust the monitor with the hardware controls, if you can -- I'm not sure the "barrelling" thing can be controlled from the video driver, in any OS.

Patience? Well, Linux is kind of a journey of discovery ... I wouldn't recommend it for the highly impatient. You've only scratched the surface of stuff that is way different from Windows. Maybe it's time for a martini?

LOOOL THIS IS A JOURNEY! ROFL

Ok....we are getting somewhere, my brain figured out a way to achieve what I wanted. I was rumaging around in the Nvidia Xl server settings and eventually found a way to alter my resolution. Believe me I had checked that place earlier and didn't see it. Uh Weird or what?!

Anyway I messed around with my resolutions and saw many all the way up to 1920x1200 which is what I expected. I set it on 1280x1024 with 85 screen refresh rate. The appearance is now completely fine on desktop, everything fits perfectly and looks 'right.'

            Phewwww! :P

            Now...eventually when I check K>System Settings>Monitor and Display I see this:

Screen Size 1280x1024 with a refresh of 111hz. I don't really understand why the 2 values are different, but hey, at the moment I'm not complaining!

Altering the resolution and refresh rate through System settings doesn't alter anything though, so I assume the Nvidia settings have over-rided it?!

Anyway, my screen is looking nice, it's all settled down.

Now to understand how to install Beryl, and get my music playing

Re: Help with boot / install please

Hey -- this is progress! See, it IS martini time!

Right -- with your Nvidia driver installed and configured, just stay away from System Settings>Monitor & Display -- it will only get you in trouble. :P

Now, about Beryl. First, I must say I loved it. Past tense, because Feisty is the last version that offers it in the repos, and Beryl development is now discontinued in favor of Compiz Fusion (which isn't working right yet for my Gutsy system). So, I'm kind of out of spinning cubes, for the moment.

Sound -- I hope it's not as much a pain for you as it has been for some. Here's the list of ALSA packages that you should install:

              alsa-base
              alsa-utils
              alsa-oss
              alsamixergui
              alsaplayer-alsa
              alsaplayer-common

There are places to send you if you have big problems getting recording or playback or other features of your sound system working.

Re: Help with boot / install please

Okay, I got my eyes back and I see that good old dible has been helping with the nvidea stuff.

As he says patience is a virtue and computers are not windows. Windows is an operating system which wants to keep your computer as far away as possible from you.

A few days ago I had to install vista on a friends laptop. what a nightmare. He didn't have any driver cd's so we had to do everything. drivers for video, network card, sound, printer, codecs. There was no helpfull forum to fall back upon and it took a day. By which time I gave up sort of, and secretly installed mint cassandra 3.0 KDE (based on feisty) gave him compiz-fusion and she is a happy trooperette)

Anyway I'm happy you got this far, now for a bit of synaptic. Remeber that link I sent you earier. Something about installing anything with synaptic? have a read.

In the meantime open up synaptic and do a search for alsa. See if the packages that dible mentioned are installed. If so, you should be okay. If not not install them by right clicking on the package you want and choosing "install" in the dropdown. When you are finished choosing click on apply and choose okay. I would also install alsamixergui just in case. When you have finished installing do a search for compiz.
You will find compiz-fusion packages. These replace beryl as beryl and compiz have fused back together. You will want to install:
                compiz kde
                compiz core
                compiz plugins
                compiz-fusion-plugins-main and extra
                copizconfig-sttings manager
emerald (style theme, you will need this)
it will aslo install a few extra things(dependancies)

Now you can try compiz-fusion by doing Ctrl+F2 (remember this you may be using this in the future) and type compiz --replace and press enter. It your screen goes black and then returns open up an app, like firefox and see the difference. when you want to leave you will have to do ctrl+alt+backspace to logout. This is also something that you should remember for future reference as it lets you log out (not reboot) quickly. Now you can login again and go to K->configurations and choose advanced desktop settings. Here you will find all kinds of pluggins to play around with.
Below that is your emerald style manager. her you can install/edit themes.

                For further reading:
                http://compiz.org/

If compiz --replace does not work, don't worry compiz-fusion for kde still has a few bugs that will be taken care of by the time gutsy becomes final in october. By which time starting/stopping or starting by default will also be taken care of.
But having read your glxgears out put you should be fine.

On a personal note: I find it works okay right now albight with two issues I don't understand yet and don't understand why it works out of the box and elegantly in Ubuntu Gutsy. Except for the fact that Gnome is the main "Line" in *buntu and KDE sort of a little sister.

Now for playing music and watching DVD's have a close look at this:
                http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/
                and this:
                http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...49.0;topicseen

Even though the guide is (still) for Feisty, it works fine in Gutsy.

Now when you want to play a music (mp3 or other) or a dvd just click on it and it should ask you if you want to download the codecs and give you a lot of legal stuff I won't go into right now. Just say yes and you should be okay.

                Welcome to the club

Edit: When you install in Linux and if it is not video or kernel orientated you DO NOT have to reboot (a bad win habit you can forget). Sometimes you may have to do a log out / in but no reboot.

Re: Help with boot / install please

                  HOORAY SUCCESS!

I installed those 'alsa things' (a few were already installed) that dibl wrote down for me and I eventually installed all the available upgrades to there's none left, so forget the above. I thought I'd leave it anyway just to inform you of my progress.

I installed all those 'Compiz packages' and the little extras with no problems. So everything today is going smoothly which is always nice!

I pressed Ctrl+F2 and noting happened, but still I typed in that command and again, nothing happened. So I went into advanced desktop and clicked on a few enhancements but nothing. I'm assuming this is because Compiz isn't activated on my desktop?

Using other desktop/keyboard shortcuts work though as I've tried Ctrk+Alt+Delete/Backspace and that logs me out.

                  I'll research about music now.

I've added libdvdread3 from that Kaffeine thread you posted but I'm having a hard time understanding what she means about adding repositories. Any help here? (remember I'm totally new to Linux) What I did was go into Adept Manager, then click Adept, manage repositories, then third party software. Then I entered the 2 lines of text into there changing the word feisty for gutsy. Is that correct?

EDIT: I DID EVERYTHING ELSE AND HEY! IT WORKED. I COULD PLAY DVD'S! 8) 8) 8)

Amarok on the other hand is having a hard time finding and playing any CD correctly atm. I'm a music fan, 24/7 and i love the stuff so this is number one priority :P

Oh and 1 final thing, yesterday before the updates I could input a portable usb device/storage device and Kubuntu noticed it straight away. Today it's not doing that. Any ideas on how I can see what's on the storage device? I have files that I need off there you see.

Sorry anothewr typo, i guess my eyes are not quite there yet
it's alt+F2. Sorry. I am off to a work lunch now so I'll get back to you on the rest later.

Glad to see you making inroads here

About repositories, repositories are links to "repositories" where software lies and can be downloaded and installed with a package manager (adept/synaptic). You can add and remove them very easily although some do not work with gutsy some do. read the synaptic link i gave you.

                    Edit:
Then I entered the 2 lines of text into there changing the word feisty for gutsy. Is that correct?
I don't know mine are still feisty and they work fine. what happens when you want to play music with amarok?

I place cd in tray and nothing happens so I open up Amarok and it doesn't seem to find my Cd when I select 'play CD.'

I'm a fan of music so I need Amarok to be working :P

Does Kubuntu see your CD? Does a cd icon show up on your desktop?

Another thing. This thread is pretty long and it looks like you got your install issues solved.

                        Congrats

I would post a new thread with your music/cd issue in the Gutsy forum. You are running gutsy right? If so it is better to ask your questions there.
Something like: "amarok doesn't see my cd." (If that is the case)
