Re: Help with boot / install please

P.s - For when I return. Where's the best website to update/change the appearance of the desktop? I.e Visual appearance. I fancy playing around with visuals at some stage for a bit of fun.
    http://kde-look.org

Do your updat/upgrade then get the hang of synaptic first then read the forum (Gutsy?) for your video and audio stuff.

    Good luck and have fun.

Re: Help with boot / install please

Hey, installation went fine. I'm on it right now. I didn't even have to go into console so it might have booted automatically like you said with VESA drivers, because I didn't do anything!

I updated the OS with that code you posted and that happened really quick, about 40 seconds. Then I tried the code below

      sudo apt-get synaptic

It doesn't work. It says 'Invalid operation synaptic'

I read what you posted earlier and that's right isn't it? Is there an other way of downloading it just in case? I'm guessing so as Linux is so flexible, but thought I'd just ask.

It's all a bit daunting at first, but it feels way smooth, like my system has just received another gig of ram or something! Lovely.

Edit: I installed it from adept installer. I wrote post before looking around sorry.

Re: Help with boot / install please

        Good to hear it.

Now you will have to do the upgrade.

In synaptic go to status->installed upgradeable->mark all upgrades->ok->apply->okay

This will upgrade your system. Do not adept for this.

        sudo apt-get synaptic
sorry my fault I am getting square eyes .

        it should read:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install synaptic
        Which Kubuntu did you install?

Re: Help with boot / install please

Hey Fintan thanks for the help, you've mad the swap over from Windows a lot easier today, I appreciate it.

I'm updating through Synaptic Package Manager as I type this message - around 500mb's of updates needed :P Will only take 7 minutes though so that's not too bad.

          I installed 7.10 - Gusty

Btw on a side note, I'm downloading/have downloaded these Nvidia drivers http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...100.14.19.html

They are for Linux and it was either those or the x86 drivers that were Linux based and for the 6 series (I've got 6800gs remember,) So I downloaded them. I guess they are right!? They were released on September 18, 2007, so they are quite new! Hope that doesn't spoil anything.

I've read the install instructions at the bottom of the page:

Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.19-pkg2.run" to install the driver. NVIDIA now provides a utility to assist you with configuration of your X config file. Please see Chapter 3 of the README or run 'man nvidia-xconfig' for details on usage. Instructions for those wishing to edit their X config file by hand can also be found in the README.
So I kinda understand what to do. It's all new to me, but you have been a good help!

NO problem. Glad to help and I know what it is like.

Yes the driver seems good. Try it you can always revert to vesa with the script I gave you.

I am going out for a few beers now and get my eyes back to a round shape

Re: Help with boot / install please

@kil, if you have any problems doing that Nvidia installation with the downloaded package, you will probably find it easier to use the Envy script installer which you can download from here: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

NOTE: Because you are using it on Gutsy before he has officially released Envy for Gutsy, you'll need to do the minor modification described in his July 29 post here:

              http://albertomilone.com/wordpress/?m=200707

First download and install Envy, then do the modification to /usr/share/envy/instun/classes.py, then run Envy to install the driver.

I've used it -- it works.

Re: Help with boot / install please

Sorry mate, I have no idea how to install this Envy thing. I click the link under 'Package for Debian and Ubuntu' from the site and it brings up 'Kate' with a load of scrambled code.

                Argh! :P

I'm really new to Linux so need step by step instructions. I've read a few websites but I'm still none the wiser.

I'm not even a n00b with computers (windows) so this is making me really angry as it's making me feel stupid! >

                  http://www.debianadmin.com/envy-ati-...made-easy.html

I've read that and it doesn't work for me. I'm sat here like a lemon wondering what to do when I've got things that need doing tonight! Argh! Times ticking away...

Re: Help with boot / install please

Yes, you wanted to be producing, but instead you're gaining an unplanned education -- sorry. About 95% of what you think you know about computers, based on your Windows experience, is actually counter-productive to working with Linux. :P

OK, here's some instruction on the Envy thing.

                    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3086232.0

Basically, you just go to the site, and depending on what browser you are using you either left-click or right-click on it, choose "download" and put it on your desktop. In Firefox, it's a single left click on the file.

LoL thanks mate, bare with me. I just hate it when you know a fair bit about computers and things go wrong. The thing is with Linux I don't have a clue where to go and what to do, but this weekend I'm spending time reading up on it all.

I'll give it a thorough go now using that link you sent me as a guide.

I bought "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" by Keir Thomas. It stays within 1 meter of my system at all times!

                          Next question lol.

I see in Nvidia control panel my refresh rate is set at 85hz, and my desktop settings are stuck at 1024x768 and 50 hz refresh.

How on Earth do I change these? My screen in bent at the sides and everything doesn't look 1024x768 resolution to me!

                          Oh, the confusion.

I could achieve 100 mhz refresh with Windows and way higher resolutions, so I'm wondering what's up here?

Edit: Trying to get KRandRTray now to help me. 8)

Re: Help with boot / install please

Pop open the Konsole, and enter
                            Code:
                            sudo nvidia-settings
Set the resolution first. On mine, the refresh rate goes to "Auto" and I leave it there -- it seems to be at 70Hz or more, so it's OK on the eyes.

Then click the "Save to X Configuration File" button down in the lower right, and click "Save" on the little window that pops up, and those will become your default settings.

I enter that code and get this:

                              Major opcode: 149

Those aren't really errors, @kil -- it's just a test to see if you are paying attention.

Seriously, they are harmless relics from a programmer who thinks EVERYONE must have a wacom tablet PC. When the time comes that this is your most pressing problem, I will share the deeply-held proprietary recipe for making that error message go away.

So, is the Nvidia driver working correctly -- do you have 3D acceleration yet? What happens when you open the Konsole and type
                                Code:
                                glxgears
                                ?
