Help with boot / install please [SOLVED]

    First off, hello!

I've had my fair share with Windows and probably like all of you here know the stories so I won't continue to discuss that rubbish.

Anyway I decided within the past few days I would 'hop over' to Linux. I've done plenty of research and read numerous reviews from different websites. I tried to install PCLinuxOS 2007 earlier but had the same problem as I will explain to you shortly. To me it boils down to graphic card / display problems, but we shall see what you guys think.

    What have I done?

I downloaded the desktop Kubuntu and checked the checksums and they match perfectly. So we can rule out right away faulty downloads.

I burned the ISO and it 'spat out the cd.' I re-entered the cd into my hard drive and up popped the auto run. So the burn was a success. I restarted my computer, booted up from cd and was presented with the menu selection screen. No problems here right? Please continue reading.

I selected the top option, and it went to the boot screen and loaded up. Ahh fine I thought, everythings going ok. Then it went off for about 4-5 seconds and I was presented with a pulsating mess of colours that were flashing in certain areas. It put Joseph and his technicolour dream coat to shame! I heard in the background what I believe to be a 'sound of loading up,' like little bells or some similar sound. So I guess it loaded up the desktop in the background, but I couldn't see because of the mess of bright pulsating colours on top of it all.

    Specs?

    AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
    1.8Ghz
    1 gig of Ram
    Nvidia Geforce 6800Gs Card

The problem to me anyway screams driver issues with display. As I mentioned I tried PCLinuxOS earlier and the story is exactly the same but instead of a pulsating coloured mess, I was left with a slightly less abusive coloured mess.

Can anyone help me here. I'm sick and tired of Windows, absolutely sick and tired of it. Such a waste of space and I want to come to Linux asap. I thought my problems were over switching to Linux but it seems a few have cropped up.

Don't know how to correct this, as I will be honest and say I'm completely new to Linux, but not new to computers!

I hope some people can shed some light on the subject and help me be converted from the 'Dark Side' to the 'Light Side' that is LINUX

Thanks in advance. Hope to speak to you soon.

uh oh, actually you need to press F6 and remove "quiet splash" in the end of boot line and add "vga=normal", so the new end of your boot line will look like this:
      vga=normal --

see if you still get garbage on your screen

Re: Help with boot / install please

I'm actually using the internet through Kubuntu as I type this message. First impressions are very nice.

Anyway, I'll try pressing F6 klerfayt next time I boot up and remove quiet splash.

Here's my resolutions anyway that were presented to me when I pressed F4, if it's any help. (as you asked for them)

        VGA
        640x400x16
        640x400x32
        640x480x16
        640x480x32
        800x600x16
        800x600x32
        1024x768x16
        1024x768x32
        1280x1024x16
        1280x1024x32
        1400x1050x16
        1600x1200x16
        2048x1536x32

        How I'm using Konqueror atm?

I remember reading about certain posts and reviews that a certain distro didn't like using 32 bit colours and had some clashes with graphics drivers, or video cards, so I chose the '1024x768x16' option which matched my current desktop resolution (also 16 bit colours.) I selected to boot into Kubuntu with the safe graphics mode, and here I am.

I've yet to try what you said and will do very shortly, and I've yet to try booting into it normally, as I've just logged into Kubuntu and thought I'd write this message.

I will keep you in touch about how things are going in due course. Thanks for your 2 replies klerfayt.

I have just booted up using this method/altered command line and was presented with the list of what console was doing or initialising. Then it went black for a few seconds and multi colours appeared again.

As I mentioned, it boots up fine in safe graphics mode. So does this mean that it's not recognising my graphics card, or is installing the wrong graphics drivers on startup (trying to boot up normally)- hence safe graphics mode works?

Basically yes. Safe graphic mode uses the vesa driver which is generic so it works with most if not all cards. So it is probably trying to find the right driver for your card and can't.

Btw which version of kubuntu are you trying to install/run? I take it from your post it is feisty. I think the gutsy version (still beat but stable enough for me) should see your card correctly.

I would post something on the gutsy forum with your graphic card specifics, or searching here for anyone else with that card.

            I hope this helps, enjoy

I'm trying to run feisty yes.

I've tried PcLinuxOS 2007 and have had the same problem there, almost identical. I was told to boot into the LiveCD using the VESA method (as you kind of mentioned above is safe graphics mode) and everything works fine. Again identically the same as Kubuntu.

I was told on to load up in VESA mode and manually install the graphics drivers myself as it's obviously not able to itself.

I'm guessing that's the exact same problem as I have here, and the same solution to my problem right?

Would I need to install the drivers before I went ahead with the clicking the 'install icon'? Or could I, after the installation, boot into Safe Graphics mode and install my drivers easily that way?

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

You can't install the drivers from the live cd and have them available after "install".

There is no safe graphics mode after you have installed. you have a normal boot and a recovery boot mode.

It is possible that the install method from the live cd will use the vesa driver upon installation if you have booted with safe mode. I won't guarantee it though.

Either way you will have to install the driver for your card after installation.

So you could do one of three things:
                - If your adventurous install from the live cd and pray.
If this does not give you a GUI desktop then repost here.

                - you could use the alternate installation cd which gives you more options (like choosing vesa) at install.
http://www.kubuntu.com/download.php#latest choose your mirror and system 64bit? then alternate cd

                - you could try the gutsy tribe 5 live cd and see if it "sees" your card with the right driver.

There being no safe graphics mode after installation would mean I couldn't access my system though right because I've tried 'normal booting,' and it's a no go for me? I get that multicoloured mess. Does/Will recovery mode let me enter the operating system after install so I can install the correct drivers?

I have a laptop computer so I could post here yes, but I've had enough 'installing Windows and praying' problems in the past, so I kinda wana leave that frustration there if possible. :P

I do have a 64 athlon processor but whenever I've downloaded things in the past I've never downloaded 64 athlon downloads, as I feel there's really no need as technology on systems and with games/software hasn't reached that level yet greatly. I could try that alternative installation though.

                  - you could try the gutsy tribe 5 live cd and see if it "sees" your card with the right driver.

If I tried Gusty and it worked ok, and then I installed it properly, is there a way/could I update to Feisty easily then? Or would I still get graphic driver problems as it's a complete new installation of the operating system?

Re: Help with boot / install please

I'll start with the last first.
gutsy is an "upgrade" from feisty. It is still beta but for me very stable. better in fact than feisty ever was. it will have it's final release in october.

I suggest this path because it comes with the latest xorg (drivers) and may see your hardware out of the box. So if the live cd works so will the installed version.

                    Read here for more:
                    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3082873.0

You can install a 32bit system on 64bit with no problems.
I would have an alternate cd handy in any occaision.

What I meant by pray is basically pray that it installs the vesa driver (which i believe it will, but don't quote me) then you can install your driver using the GUI (desktop) instead of the command line.
Pray in linux is usually asking questions and getting answers. Praying with windows is waiting for a miracle

Yes, you can boot into recovery mode and use the command line to configure your xorg to use vesa.

                    This will mean typing :
                    Code:
                    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
at the promt after recovery has booted up.

Then you can boot into the GUI (desktop) and install your drivers.

I hope this gets you started, but the choice is yours. If it was mine I would go the gutsy path. but that is me.

Yeah I might download the gutsy version and whack it onto cd to test the live version in due course. Beta programmes always worried me in the past (from a Windows perspective,) meaning you always expected faults, but hey, that's Windows in general for you eh?! How has the beta release of gutsy helped you? What improvements involving stability have you noticed then?

What I meant by pray is basically pray that it installs the vesa driver (which i believe it will, but don't quote me) then you can install your driver using the GUI (desktop) instead of the command line.

Heh, so true. If something goes wrong with Windows during installation or booting up, the BSOD's etc, you're basically running down a dead end. Problem after problem. It would be easier if I didn't have to use the command line yes as I'm new to Linux, but there's no problem at all as I'll write all this information down and I'm not computer illiterate anyway.

Yes, you can boot into recovery mode and use the command line to configure your xorg to use vesa.

Then you can boot into the GUI (desktop) and install your drivers.
Much has been cleared up, thank you. Linux it seems offers you many paths to achieve certain goals and objectives. Booting up into recovery mode, entering a simple command, booting up onto desktop and installing drivers that way. How it makes Windows look stupid, overly complicated and a complete mess. :P

I hope this gets you started, but the choice is yours. If it was mine I would go the gutsy path. but that is me.
Yeah I might download gutsy and put it onto disk to try. That's the great thing about these Live CD's. It's like a car sales room. Try before you buy, or a test drive even. Everything else worked fine when I booted in graphic safe mode. It found my internet connection etc easily. The only problem has been the coloured mess on screen which as you pointed out seems to be easily fixed through recovery mode, then finding my graphics drivers that way.

One other question regarding my internet connection and from Windows experience. I use Orange Livebox (I know, let's not talk about that,) and installing Windows from scratch in the past, I had to place the Orange CD in the drive and install certain 'Livebox' drivers. You couldn't access the internet straight from the box like I did earlier in Kubuntu.

Now, would I still need to add the Orange Livebox drivers to Kubuntu, or the fact that it found and installed the Nvidia Ethernet driver makes everything ok? Bit of a silly question, but I just wanted to clear that up.

                      Thanks for your reply.

Re: Help with boot / install please

I have been "testing" gutsy for more than a month now and find it extremely stable on my machine. so much so that I am actually using it as my main OS.

I don't know about orange livebox, we don't have that in switzerland. But I would suppost if the live cd saw your network card and you could surf with it you won't have a problem.

On more point: when you get kubuntu (either flavor) installed the first thing I would do is open a terminal K->system->terminal and install synaptic.
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get update
                        then:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get synaptic
the terminal will ask you for your password. Type it in (you won't see it) and press enter.

It is a much more stable package manager. Very intuitive and easy to use. I never use adept. Then use synaptic to do your first update. You will find the updates under status->installed (upgradable) .It will be a long one after your first install but worth it. Then you will have a clean up to date system.

Re: Help with boot / install please

Ok Fintan, I tried Gusty and the same problem at the same time happened. It booted up, selected the top option, then after a while of coding was met with coloured messy screen.

So the problem is happening with PCLinuxOS, Feisty and Gusty. So I guess if I do go ahead and install it, I'll need to boot into recovery mode after install and do the command line details you posted earlier to get access and install relevant graphics drivers. A solution to the problem is not forthcoming and is happening with every try.

                          Would the command line
                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
work for PCLinuxOS as well (because I have the same problem with that?) I'm thinking of using both, or one of them and PCLinuxOS was my first choice if any.

Re: Help with boot / install please

I am sorry to hear that. Oh, well.

I made a small typo, if you are in recovery mode you already are in root so the code is:
                            Code:
                            dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and yes that works in pclinuxos 2007 as well.

I like that distro althought I find it a bit slow and the package manager (which is synaptic) veeeery slow, not because of synaptic but because they use .rpm's (red hats app format)instead of .deb's (debian app format) and I don't like their forum.

But again, the choice is yours but if you do choose Kubuntu go the gutsy path as you'll have the most recent release.

Enjoy and let us know how things go.

                            Cheers

Okay, Windows has been erased from my system and I'm currently writing this from Kubuntu Live cd. After I post this, I'll double click the install icon and away we go!

I expect a few problems along the way, but I have that code written down so I can enter it on reboot at Recovery. Hopefully that will be the only trouble I will have, although I did notice Amarok was having problems playing my CD I tested. I did research this though a fair bit in gathering my knowledge together for coming to Linux and you need to collect the correct codecs, I'm sure I remember.

Anyway, I'll try installing right after this message has been posted, and we shall see where I go from there. Here's to fingers cross and all the luck in the World!

P.s - For when I return. Where's the best website to update/change the appearance of the desktop? I.e Visual appearance. I fancy playing around with visuals at some stage for a bit of fun.

Anyway, I'm off until I post about my success or non success after attempted install.
