First off, hello!
I've had my fair share with Windows and probably like all of you here know the stories so I won't continue to discuss that rubbish.
Anyway I decided within the past few days I would 'hop over' to Linux. I've done plenty of research and read numerous reviews from different websites. I tried to install PCLinuxOS 2007 earlier but had the same problem as I will explain to you shortly. To me it boils down to graphic card / display problems, but we shall see what you guys think.
What have I done?
I downloaded the desktop Kubuntu and checked the checksums and they match perfectly. So we can rule out right away faulty downloads.
I burned the ISO and it 'spat out the cd.' I re-entered the cd into my hard drive and up popped the auto run. So the burn was a success. I restarted my computer, booted up from cd and was presented with the menu selection screen. No problems here right? Please continue reading.
I selected the top option, and it went to the boot screen and loaded up. Ahh fine I thought, everythings going ok. Then it went off for about 4-5 seconds and I was presented with a pulsating mess of colours that were flashing in certain areas. It put Joseph and his technicolour dream coat to shame! I heard in the background what I believe to be a 'sound of loading up,' like little bells or some similar sound. So I guess it loaded up the desktop in the background, but I couldn't see because of the mess of bright pulsating colours on top of it all.
Specs?
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
1.8Ghz
1 gig of Ram
Nvidia Geforce 6800Gs Card
The problem to me anyway screams driver issues with display. As I mentioned I tried PCLinuxOS earlier and the story is exactly the same but instead of a pulsating coloured mess, I was left with a slightly less abusive coloured mess.
Can anyone help me here. I'm sick and tired of Windows, absolutely sick and tired of it. Such a waste of space and I want to come to Linux asap. I thought my problems were over switching to Linux but it seems a few have cropped up.
Don't know how to correct this, as I will be honest and say I'm completely new to Linux, but not new to computers!
I hope some people can shed some light on the subject and help me be converted from the 'Dark Side' to the 'Light Side' that is LINUX
Thanks in advance. Hope to speak to you soon.
