    Re: Kubuntu Install

I'm installing Kubuntu onto a Pentium III Gateway E-4400. When the PC boots from the disc I get the option to install the software. It goes throught the install and I am left with a black screen with a cursor. It appears that it is installing, I believe it is only running from the disc. I was able to get some screen captures posted and I am hoping someone can shed some light on it.

        Re: Kubuntu Install

I typed in the command 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' at the Kubuntu command prompt. When I hit return, nothing happened. After awhile I hit return a few more times and just a blank screen. I don't think the software is loading onto the hard drive. Any other suggestions?

Hmmmmmmmmm. You said "I believe it is only running from the CD", and I think you may be right!

Can you download and burn the "Alternate Install" ISO image to a CD -- it would be the "kubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso " version, for your Pentium. This will give you a little more visibility on the step-by-step installation process.

          P.S. burn it slow -- 4X

Every time I try to download it craps out on me. I even have DSL, and I have a connection at work. Can you mail me a copy? Can you help me with the current CD I have?

Sure, I could mail you a CD (assuming you're in the USA), but it's multiple days of lost time. You have the Live CD? It might be possible to work with that -- is it F6 that gives you "Options" when you boot it? I think you need to do that, and choose "VGA" or "Character Mode" or whatever the heck the simple graphics mode is. I haven't seen that since Edgy ... :P

                Re: Kubuntu Install

I tried VGA mode, no change. I'll try a few other modes as well and post the results. Eitherway, I cant get Kubuntu to load. It will only run from the CD. I've tried two different hard drive's too.

                  Re: Kubuntu Install

Ok, I don't think I have a screen resolution problem. When the PC boots from the CD, the Kubuntu screen displaying the load status is fine. I tried different resolutions and that is not the issue. There is definately an issue with the software loading to the hard drive. Take a look again at the link I provided at the beginning of the thread. You can see the display looks fine as it is loading. If there 'is' and actual display issue as the article suggested in the thread, it's not due to resolution. Please look over again.

I installed the alternative desktop edition. It worked like a champ. Thanks for the help
