    Kubuntu wont start after change

hey there, new to linux a friend got me hooked up and I installed it on my laptop. Everything was working fine including Beryl, but then I changed the video driver from i810 to intel 915GM to match my video card after reading some stuff. I was tring to get the rain drop effect running, thus the change. Now when I boot up, the Kubuntu splash screen comes up and the blue bar goes all the way across, then some messages come up that are to fast for me to read and then the Kubuntu splash screen comes agian and does nothing, then a minute later all I get is a black screen and a curser. I tried booting up in recovery mode but when I get to the command line I really don't know what to do. I tried googling it and got nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

When you get to the command promt in recovery mode type

      Code:
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
use manual card detection and choose 915GM (if you are sure that that is your card). For the rest choose the defaults (unless you are sure of what you are doing).
at the end of the process type startx and see what happens.
If you get your desktop back great if not redo the above and choose i810.

      I hope that helps.

      Cheers

Thanks Fintan that worked. I never got a option to select 915GM so I did the i810. Another question if you know the answer, I was wanting to get a higher resolution the most I can get is 1024 x 768. I have read that the card will go higher res, do I just need to download a new driver from the main repository or is there something else I need to do.

You might want to look into the package "xserver-xorg-video-intel" -- it works very well for some of the Intel chips -- I'm not sure about yours.

I downloaded the package 915resolution form the repository and /I don't know how to run it. There are some instructions in a readme file but I get permission denied when I try it. And that looks like it makes changes in the BIOS setup. Is there a way to run the new driver and test it? I can't change it in the system settings.

As far as "running" the new driver, you can restart the xserver with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and the new driver will be running the new X session.

If there's a utility or something for that 915 driver, I dunno -- you'll have to research that. Usually when you look at packages in Adept (or Synaptic), there's a bit of explanatory material with it -- maybe you can get a clue that way.

Re: Kubuntu wont start after change

I found the readme file and tried to do whats in there but I get a message saying permission no allowed, even through I am in the root shell. I am very new to this so that's why I am so dumb about things. Also I don't see a run utility any where in the files. So maybe it's just changing things in the command line for the BIOS.

i810 and 915GM. Same as my video driver and video card. Read the following (from the log I keep of manual changes made to my system), go to the web site and read the info there, then follow the instructions. This may help you with your problem.

                  8. Install 915resolution package
                  2007-07-27
                  Installed:
                  915resolution
                  Comment(s):
915resolution is a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800 and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets. This includes the 845G, 855G, and 865G chipsets, as well as 915G, 915GM, and 945G chipsets. This modification is necessary to allow the display of certain graphics resolutions for an Xorg or XFree86 graphics server.
915resolution's modifications of the BIOS are transient. There is no risk of permanent modification of the BIOS. This also means that 915resolution must be run every time the computer boots in order for its changes to take effect. If you want to automatically set the resolution on each boot and before X is launched, see /usr/share/doc/915resolution/README.Debian for information about configuring the provided initscript.
