No. There's nothing in the Win XP installation that has any effect on your Linux system, when Linux is running.

It's a kind of a security measure. If the new kernel broke something (that can happen as kernel updates are a very sensible thing), you can still boot your old one.

So, can you copy a file from the Windows side of the system to your /home folder? If not, what is the error, or what do you observe when you try it?

                  Re: dual booting

OK, so you need permission to copy files from the Windows side. Open Konqueror with Super User privileges by entering in the Konsole
                  Code:
                  kdesu konqueror
, then browse to the partition where your Windows data files are located, Right-click in the white space (i.e. not on top of a folder or file) and choose "Properties". Click the "Permissions" tab. In the upper part of the panel, where it says "Owner" and "Group", make sure the windows are set to "Can View And Modify Content". Then in the lower part of the panel, set yourself as the User and the Group. (I'm assuming this is your personal workstation and you don't need to exclude other users from that partition and data.)

That's it -- you should be able to copy data from the Windows drive/partition to your /home directory.

If you intend to copy in the other direction, from Kubuntu to Windows, there's another set of issue -- basically you'll have to install the package "ntfs-3g" and configure it. If you search on that package name, here or in Ubuntu Forum, you'll find the details.

                      Re: dual booting

I know this is confusing but you should use the
                      Code:
                       kdesu konqueror
only in conjunction with the following:
Alt+F2 (press Alt and F2 at the same time) or run program in K(Kmenu) then type the above code into the new panel, give your password then do the rest as dible so suitably describes.

If you want to use the terminal use sudo instead of kdesu.

Oh okay. Well I suppose that is a question of choice. I like that screen as it lets me access my network files directly.

So can you change the permissions and copy files now?
