    thinkpad won't boot from cd

My moms thinkpad hdd just crashed and I replaced it with a new WD 40gig hdd. I can't install feisty or anything because it won't boot from the cd. I have tried the alternate cd and supergrub and gparted as well as windows xp cd. Nothing works.
pxe-e61 is the error i get. I have disabled all boot devices except the cdrom in bios. The new hdd is listed at boot as fixed disk:0 WDC blah blah. The cdrom won't even spin up except when the gparted cd is in.
I am lost at this point.

I tried Enlightenment once, it was pretty cool.

I'm afraid maybe the hdd wasn't the only thing that died, that day ....

Re: thinkpad won't boot from cd

I guess there's a remote possibility of some interrupt-conflict between the replacement hdd and the CD ROM drive ... but if it's all IDE/PATA, then that's a pretty remote case. I guess if you can't boot anything, you can't very well study the interrupts, can you?

EDIT: Since it's all snarfed up anyway, you could set the CD ROM drive to be "Master" and the hdd to be "slave" on the IDE bus. Just an experiment.

            Hmmmmm .... me neither!

            OK.

Plan A -- go into BIOS, to the IDE device settings, and change it there.

Plan B -- Open the lappy, pull out the hard drive, find the jumper that sets its mode to "master", "slave" or "cable select", and change it to the "slave" position. Possibly the CD ROM drive also has a jumpered mode setting -- I don't recall seeing one, so I'm not sure about that. If it does, jumper it to be the Master.

Plan C -- open the lappy, take the IDE ribbon cable (or perhaps ANOTHER IDE ribbon cable), and change the connectors on the two devices so that the END connector is on the CD ROM drive and the middle connector is on the hard drive. This will only work if you have the IDE setup as "cable select" in BIOS.

I hope one of these works!

found the jumper instructions for the hd but there is no jumper. I tried one that i pulled from a desktop but it is too big. there isn't a way to jump the cdrom. I am not gonna try to switch cables. I've had the darn thing apart before and do not wish to get any deeper into it. Looks like target practice this weekend.

Yeah, the jumpers on hdd's are little buggers.

Good luck with the target practice! Start at 300 yards, and work your way in ....

lets go back to the keyboard, sometimes there are other keys than the normal enter BIOS button, so play around with all the Fs, like F12 during boot, esc and dell, also have you looked at the model on the maker's site. don't give up just yet, thanks
