cant access tty, workaround problem with partition

Hey everyone, noob here and I'm having a problem installing from live c.d.
When i first tried to boot from the live c.d. i kept getting the cant acess tty error, someone suggested inserting a blank floppy then clicking the start and install, which worked a treat.
It booted into the desktop and after opening the install icon I can get to the prepare disk space which is step 4 of 6.
This is where i run into trouble, it seems as though my hd isnt being found as the only disk is
    /dev/fdo - 1.5 mb unknown
as i am really new to kubuntu any help would be appreciated.
I have just installed simplymepis on this computer as my kubuntu live cd isn't happening for me...
Edit: Hmmm...after booting to desktop and removing the floppy the installer gets to the same step then wants me to manually set up the partitions... but there is nothing there...
