    My guess: disk full ...

Reboot and login to "recovery mode", then issue df -h -x tmpfs -x usbfs to get an idea of what's going wrong. One point to start cleaning up from: clear the package manager's cache by issuing [sudo] apt-get clean (further reading).

To avoid such problems in the future, you may want to take a look at this script / tool as well.

Thanx unicorn, for your guess was in the target. And the commands worked to log me in.
Any pointers to increase the partioned disk to include more space apart from reinstalling will be appreciated.
Nevertheless thanx for your timely help

      Cheers

If possible, moving /home to a separate partition (as well as creating a dedicated /data partition) might prove helpful (further reading).
