    Blank screen after Grub selection.

    Hi ppl.

I installed Kubuntu 7.04 without any problems and restarted my machine after it was done. I removed the CD and grub loaded, I selected Kubuntu, but then the screen went blank. Just black with a cursor in the top left corner. It looks like it's about to load Kubuntu, but it doesn't.

    Hope someone can help?

Can you type anything on the cursor?

Try to hit CRTL+F1, CTRL+F2, ... if the screen changes and you see any message error, please report it here.

And finally try to boot on the safe mode and see if it makes any difference.

    Javier.

I am kinda a noob myself with linux but try ctrl+alt+backspace see if that gets you to a command prompt. I know there is a boot log somewhere too you would have to look that up I don't remember where but maybe goto into windows or use live cd and access that file see what's going on.

i am having the same problem on a brand new HP dv9420us laptop. It does the same thing when i try to boot off the live cd too. i had to run installation through the text-based installer. i will try those keyboard shortcuts and post back what i get.

tried all your ideas. when i boot in recovery mode it freezes while the screen is scrolling with loading information. when i run it normaly the Kubuntu loading screen comes up, the bar goes from 0-100% and then i just get a blank screen... it responds to no commands (including numlock, the light doesnt come on) which makes me think its locking up. any ideas? maybe kubuntu doesnt have the right drivers?

                ryandle:

Your graphic card shouldn't be the cause of the problem, I have installed all three flavors of ubuntu in quite a few HP/Compaq machines hosting your same graphic chip with no issues. The only trouble was with the Broadcom 43xx wireless chip firmware, but that didn't give me a fatal error. To pinpoint your problem, you need to know what piece of hardware is freezing your machine, so try to boot in recovery mode and take note of the last line of the loading info before it freezes... that could give us an idea of where to look.

Sounds like you are ruling out graphics configuration.
                  Here’s dibl’s recent How-To on that:

Re: Blank screen after Grub selection.

well, i couldnt follow his steps because my computer was fully locking up after the kubuntu loading screen.

i installed suse 10.2, that worked but it doesnt support my wireless card (looks like im gonna have trouble with that no matter what flavor).

i decided i really want kubuntu, so i reinstalled kubuntu. same problem, except i was able to boot into recovery mode and get a command prompt. i went through the xorg config like it said. then i typed startx and got these 2 lines and then the laptop froze....

xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth4282
                    xauth: creating new authority file/root/.Xauthority

so i rebooted, choose to run it normaly...still freezing with a blank screen directly after the kubuntu loading screen.

Re: Blank screen after Grub selection.

You say it won't run the Live Cd -- that's a real bad sign.

However, if you will get it booted in text mode, via the recovery screen, and post the output of
                      Code:
                      cat | dmesg
                      maybe we'll learn something.

                        Alright,

just tried to boot it in recovery mode this time. heres what i got.

and it is frozen after that line (im typing all of this onto my main box while looking at the frozen screen, sorry i wish i could log it somehow but its freezing up before i get to a command prompt)

i cold booted it 2 more times, choose recovery both times and it freezes on that same line.

any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you all for the help so far.

No, I can't type anything and nothing happens when I press Ctrl+F1 or Ctrl+F2.

I pressed 'e' to view grub boot command(?).
                            This is what it says:
                            Code:
                            root (hd0,4)

                            initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
                            quiet
                            savedefault
I tried to alter "root (hd0,4)" to "root (hd0,3)", but then it said that it couldn't mount that partition.

                            So.... I'm stuck

But I doubt it's the graphics card, running live CD works fine.
