I am re-installing kubuntu 6.1 and want to install it in partition hdb10. I also want to install the boot loader in the same partition. When I run the install program I select the option to manually manage my partitions and I choose hdb10 as the root partition. Then on page 6 of the disk selection process there's an entry for the boot loader which is initially hd0. I don't understand what hd0 means but I change that to hdb10 which is what I want. I then run through the install process which seems to work great until it comes to installing Grub where it runs into a fatal error. How do I install and put the Grub boot loader into hdb10?

Reinstalling? Did you have it successfull installed previously?
Based on your post, you want to install on the eleventh partition of your second hard drive (hdb10). Is this the only partition you have available for installing Edgy to?
Ideally, you should have at least three partitions set up for installing: one for / (the root file system), one for /home (were user's files will be stored) and one for /swap Posts concerning partitioning schemes suggest a 50MB / partition, and a /swap partition that is 1.5 times the size of the RAM you have in your PC. The rest is for your /home partition unless you want to use less and reserve additional space for future use. So, how do you have your drive(s) set up now?

Maybe you have to use only GRUB notation in that Step 6 Advanced button.
Assuming everything is “normal” here, hdb10 is (Linux notation for) the second hard drive, the 10th partition, and in GRUB would be (hd1, 9) (GRUB starts counting at zero).
That should do it.

I had been looking for what I believed was a post/reply by you on an earlier (much?) topic, addressing this. 5GB to 10GB for / allows for 'multiple upgrades' of the kernel if I recall correctly, which was the main reason for a root partition in this size range.
I'm learning.

Furthermore, adding some extra space (or an extra script ...) could help keeping the package manager from cramming the root file system (as well as, in consequence, crashing the system ...).Comment
