    No Grub ...

    Hi all,

    How can I load my kubuntu without installing grub during the installation process.
    I've had bad experience with the MBR at the past.

    I am working with win2k on the same machine.

    Thanks
    A.

    Re: No Grub ...

    i assume you're on the desktop cd...
    don't know if there's a "smarter" way of doing it.
    'cause i didn't see an option that allowed to skip the installation of grub...
    click on the "advanced..." button, right at the start of the actual install.
    something pops up saying it will install grub in (hd0) or something.
    you delete that and click ok.
    the damn thing will still try to install grub...
    though somehow decides to install it in /dev.
    of course it won't be able to and will error out.
    since, at that point, you'll be at the end of the install, you can happily forget about it.

    as said, there might be an actual way of doing it

      There is Alternate Kubuntu CD:

      Alternate install CD

      The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Kubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

      * creating pre-configured OEM systems;
      * setting up automated deployments;
      * upgrading from older installations without network access;
      * LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
      * installs on systems with less than about 256MB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).

      With alternate cd:

      This is the main menu for Ubuntu (you are installing Kubuntu ) installer

      Choose the next step in the install process:

      clip
      Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk
      Install the LILO boot loader on a hard disk
      Continue without boot loader
      clip

        Re: No Grub ...

        You can do it with the Alternate install method as Rog131 says.

        With the regular Desktop Live CD installer, select the manual partitioning method, work through the 6 steps, and on Step 6, lower right corner, there’s an Advanced button, click it, and tell it to put GRUB in the SAME partition as you put your Kubuntu operating system root files.

        Example: If you installed Kubuntu to (hd0, 2), then put GRUB in (hd0, 2) also.

        This will do no harm. It will NOT affect any MBR, and the GRUB files will be safely sitting there in Kubuntu (/boot/grub) if you ever should need them.
        In fact, if you ever need to boot it by configfile or chainloading or something, you will be able to from a GRUB prompt.

          Re: No Grub ...

          Avoril: do you have a floppy 3 1/2" drive? If you do, you can copy your grub's stage1 to the floppy (via a "grub-install /dev/fd0", a grub shell "setup (fd0)" or a "dd" command) and boot from there when you want to boot your kubuntu. Later, if you want to pull out the floppy drive, you can make a bootable CD with the floppy's image.

            That’s a good idea, nejode.

            In fact, along those same lines, you can make a bootable thumb drive or flash drive (USB Flash Drive, UFD) with grub on it (and your own custom boot menu):

            Or, just make a bootable Super Grub Disk CD:
